Differences: original 289 Cobra & original 427 S/C Cobra
What are the differences between the 289 Cobra and the 427 S/C Cobra?
For starters, the obvious: 289 Cobra has a hi-po small block 289 427 Cobra has NASCAR 427 side-oiler 289 has "buggy spring" front suspension 427 has coil spring front suspension 289 has forward-braced roll-hoop 427 has rearward-braced roll-hoop 289 gas cap located mid-panel behind the passenger seat 427 gas cap located on the top of the right rear fender 289 has exhaust pipes under the car 427 has exhaust pipes on sides of car What other comparisons can be made that I've overlooked? |
6. 289 had no fender flares, per se, hence the "slab-side" moniker. 7. grille opening was smaller, and a different shape than 427 cars. 8. small inlets on 427 car, just outboard of quick-jack/bumper mounts, used for brake cooling duct. (I think). 9. Most 289 cars didnt have a rollbar; 289FIA cars had the forward-mount rollbar. 289FIA Cobras had the flared front fenders, minus the brake cooling vents, and "cut-back" doors...these doors' rear edges were curved to match the shape of the rear flares.

also ....
289 Shifter short straight 427 rearward and bent forward dash layout 427 4" wider (i think) 289 3" tube frame 427 4" tube frame and a lot of smaller stuff I cant think of right now KK |
427 4" wider,,,,,measured at the fender flares? I assume the cockpit area was the same?

and the 289's were so much better looking...:3DSMILE:
I have a site I'll send you when I get back to my other machine... It puts the cars side by side and makes the comparisons.. It's very dramatic to see the differences between the cars. |
Hey ya gotta admire Ccasaleenie---
----at the very least, he's got the best slogans...BUTT(!) methinks he's a tad biased!!
|
Nose to Nose,,,,which is a 289?
Ernie
|
This one is the 289, and that one is the 427! Piece of cake!!
|
289 on left, 427 on right?
One other major difference...speed. The 427 is way faster. :) |
OK,,,that was TO easy for you guys! Yup, 427 on the right. They dropped the nose to get it out of the air!
Also, note how the 289 head light "protrudes" farther out. Not only noticable here, but when you LOOK for it, can be seen from various angles. Ernie |
Hi guys The differents is between taking a knife to a gun fight or a cannon.  ;) :D The noses are different FIA to S/C. Was there a drysump on the small blocks?? I know a couple where on the BBs Rick Lake relax guys having fun:D
|
Depending on the terrain a gun might be much better suited to the task than a cannon!
Small guns re-load quicker, fire faster but don't pack as much "punch". If the terrain is LeMans and the opponent is Ferrari, better bring the cannon! Ernie |

Well there you go!!! The "cannon" is not always the best choice!
Now what was that about the Ferraris having a higher top speed at LeMans, thus prompting the 427 transplant? Small block in the Coupe? Well, THATS a different matter all together! Ernie |
I like the sound of a GROWL over a WHINE any day. One thing, as long as the cobra gets first place. Rick Lake

Thanks for all the replies to this question.
Anyone out there compare a Kirkham or Shelby 289FIA vs. a Kirmham or Shelby 427 in terms of handling on the track and street? The "buggy spring" suspension on the 289FIA makes me a little nervous (accurate within 10 meters?), but so does all that weight in the nose of a 427 (understeer and concrete barriers). Has anyone driven both, and bought one or the other? I know, I know, buy a 427 and put it an aluminum big block. Ea$y for you to $ay. -Doug |
Did you see my FOR SALE posting of "slabside?" It looks markedly different from 289 shown above in profile comparison with 427. Comes with Ford Motorsports E-303 full roller 5.0 litre engine. Coil over adj. shocks/4 wheel discs all around. From original slabside, but in robust fibreglas. Edlebrock RPM intake (cast 289 intake spare) with Holley 570 (600 spare). Send me an e-mail and I'll send some pix. Silver/black with rollbar. QI Eurocode lights, 5-spoke grey American mags with Halibrand-like towers. 3.55:1 locker 9" rear. Custom tonneau. Simple, solid and sorted. 8000 miles. Priced to sell at $27,500.

Oh, almost forgot ! 289s had the reputation of being much more "traffic friendly" and easier to drive/handle. In fact, in one of my Cobra books, author (Dave Friedman, I think) said that although staff all had access to entire Cobra stable, nearly all gravitated to the 289 after trying the 427.

FastEddy,
Sounds like a nice car, but I don't have the $28k burning a hole in my wallet at the moment. I'm not sure I'm into the 'slab-side' look, myself. I like the 289 FIA and the 427 S/ for their flared fenders over the slab-side look. Anyone know if Shelby is offering/going to offer a CAV-based fiberglass 289FIA? |
I'm back in town and I looked up that site for the differences between the 289 and 427
It's on the ERA website erareplicas.com/differ/index/htm Look for it there |
