Thief stole my hat

I was at the Cherries Jubilee Event on Sat. the 13th in Monterey, Ca. Walking back to our cobra in the overflow parking area my wife and I saw the trunk of our cobra open and a guy bending over looking in the trunk. We were a 1/4 mile away but could see what was happening. I immediately broke into a run, had to go over a covered bridge and along a fence, so I lost sight of the guy. When I got close to the cars I saw the guy walking up to his green cobra with a tonneau cover and getting into his trunk. I came up to him and asked him if he had been in the trunk of my cobra. He said no. I said I saw someone in my trunk and he said he always locked his trunk. Because I didn’t actually see him go from my car to his I gave him the benefit of doubt. I then went to my car and checked the trunk. The trunk handle was in the unlatched position. Everything in the trunk looked ok. Car cover, sweatshirts, wife’s purse, tools, all there. My wife caught up to me and said she saw the whole thing while standing by the covered bridge. The guy I talked to was the one who was in our trunk. I figured everything looked good so dismissed it. Sunday night I cleaned out the trunk and I’m missing my new tan cobra hat. I wore it down to Laguna Seca but not going home. Shame on me. I didn’t lock my trunk. Shame on me. I trusted a fellow cobra owner. It’s not the money. It’s the thought that a cobra enthusiast, someone with the passion for these cars would lie and steal. That really gets to me. I have so enjoyed the last couple of years as a CC member. I thought all cobra owners were trustworthy and helpful. Well I met one who is not. I hope he is not a CC member. So look out. A guy in a green cobra with a tonneau cover who wishes to steal items out of your car is out there looking at you. I am really sorry to have to say all this and I apologize to the owners of green cobras who are not this person.

The LOW life. I hope you discover his name and run across him again.

I'm blown away! A thief who drives a Cobra and steals from another Cobra?

That is hard to understand. Got to be a very rare person,,,,,,,I hope!

If you see him again take a pic of him and his car. Post it so we will all know.

All this for a $20.00 hat.

He probably purchased the car. He doesn't sound like he has the fortitude to build his.

It breaks the heart to find slime so close to home.

Sorry to hear your hat and car was violated.

mrmustang 09-16-2003 09:22 AM

Tom,

That is pathetic, stealing is just the lowest thing one cobra owner could do to another. Email me your home address, and I'll send you a new Cobra hat, and a Club Cobra hat compliments of Cobrapromotions.net (which I now own).

Sincerely,

Bill S.

Hey Bill,

That's very nice of you!

Tom, it would be great if you got the license number of his car. It's probably stolen too! Real Cobra people don't do that stuff, we watch out for each other.

Are you insane?? What the hell kind of a statement is that???

casaleenie 09-16-2003 11:26 AM

Someone out there today is getting his car color changed..
He stole a $20. hat and has to spend 3K for a paint job to escape detection..

Alex Donghi 09-16-2003 01:04 PM

Really???? I didn't build my car but I wouldn't steal a lousy used $20 dollar hat. Who needs somebody elses sweat.

Damn! As the kids say today: "Why you gotta be hatin'????"

I purchased my car, and I will take my fortitude behind the wheel over your fortitude behind a wrench anyday.

Tom Howland 09-16-2003 03:52 PM

Thankyou for your thoughts everyone!! Yes, I should take my camera with me more often.
Bill S., Thanks for the offer. But this gives me a great excuse to go shopping at Finish Line again.

Jeeze, never had anything missing from my car when i am gone form it, forget my Valentine, the sunglasses, the cell phone, stuff like that. Just lucky so far, i guess.

Taking a hat is like sneaking away with a man's unwashed underwear.

Come to think of it, i did it once, myself. A year or so ago, was up at the Olthoff's, dennis did some quick check under my dash, and later i hopped in, drove home, found his nice new SPF hat, with some badges, thought it very kindly of him that he gave that to me. Got a phone call later that day, asking for the hat he left by accident in my car, so i mailed it back to him pronto!

He gave me one of my own next time i was up to the shop.

casaleenie 09-16-2003 06:03 PM

UUhhh, Hal.. by the way, what color is your car????

Fred Douglass 09-16-2003 06:27 PM

Tom, that's an outrage!

...and to have it happen to an Arntz(Butler) owner! We're mobilizing as I type! I had given some thought to having a tonneau made---especially when some jerk-o** decided that it was okay to get into my car this summer, while it was sitting in a crowded parking lot in Newport (RI). I had seen them drive in, park and had turned away, getting all the way across the lot. I then saw this (very attractive) girl stop near my car and it took a moment for me to look over to the other side and here was As*hole sitting in the driver's seat!

My drvier's seat! As I said, I had seen them earlier driving into the lot in a new blue Porsche convertible.

You KNOW what I did next! Need I relate this? I stealthed over to THEIR car---got in and proceeded to sit there. It was hysterical---I couldn't have been two rows directly behind my car. It took the young "expert" MINUTES to notice me when his girl pointed out that a VERY large buffalo-like hominid was in THEIR car!

He gets out of MY cobra---SLAMS my door(!) and starts coming back like his as* is on fire. Well,. one good slam deserves another. I can put some--ahem--weight behind my slammin' junior. Lucky his window glass didn't go. He closes in, does a mental physics problem and the says: "What the Hell are you DOIN" sittin' in my car? Slammin' my DOOR!???!!!"

I just laughed. He moved a tad closer........NAW I didn't deck him.

I simply said "Returning the favor, Big Buy.....I bet your girlfriend knows what I mean---and unless she tells you, you will probably go to your death-bed mystified....."

I always lock the trunk. Maybe now a tonneau. I figured roadster afficianadoes stuck together. NOW I find COBRA-guys aren't even all on one team! Sheeeesh!

Alex Donghi 09-16-2003 07:15 PM

Russ
agree built cars in my youth but writing a check and getting behind the wheel was no problem here

casaleenie 09-16-2003 08:00 PM

Maybe the green Cobra was a Hertz rental and the guy who stole the hat wasn't really a Cobra owner.. :MECOOL:

Tom Howland 09-16-2003 08:25 PM

Casaleenie
That was really good!!!

mrmustang 09-17-2003 05:06 AM

Tom,

The offer still stands in case you change your mind.

Sincerely,

Bill S.

The only thing I've ever had swiped from me out of a cobra was a bottle of Viagra. I won't get into why I had it in the first place though.
