Question MSD question

I was out crusing the other night with my good friend Dan Semko
and we was getting on it alittle bit and my rev limiter wasn't working. It's a MSD 6AL. I had a 6000 chip in it and it would go right on by. So we replaced it with another 6000 chip, samething right on by. Dan had a 3000 chip so we put that in and rev it up to see where it would work, Well it work butt at 4000 rpm.
Well we put in a 5000 chip and now it works at 6500 rpm.
Anybody have any ideas. I'm clueless.

Mark..

Has the MSD 6AL box been set for other than 8 cylinders. If it has then the rev limiter will not work properly. The only thing that doesn't make sense is that it is set from the factory for 8 cylinders so if you haven't modified it then this should not be the problem.

The cylinder select device is on the top of the MSD 6AL box, on the opposite side of the rpm socket. Remove the phillips screw on the cover of the cylinder select device. Under the cover there should be two loops of wire. One red and the other blue. They should not be cut for 8 cylinder operation. For 6 cylinder the red loop should be cut and for 4 cylinder both the red and blue loops should be cut. So if either or both the loops are cut then your box has been modified for 4 or 6 cylinder operation. They come from the factory set up for 8 cylinder operation.

Mark,

I tried to attach the page from the MSD 6AL manual on how to change the cylinder settings but the file is too large. If you e-mail me I will send the page by e-mail.

Have fun, Ray
