Default WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A "REPLICA" and a "KIT CAR"

One insurance comany said that they WOULD insure a "replica" but NOT a "kit car". What is the difference as far as they are concerned? cb

You'll need to ask the underwriter of the company you are dealing with. But I think in general terms, they see a "Replica" as a car built by a professional shop or by a corporation, business or some type of factory. They generally think of a "Kit Car" as something built at home by an amateur, in their garage. Not that their perception is right or wrong, it is what it is.

Default KIT CAR VS REPLICA

MAYBE THEY THINK THAT:
AMATURS BUILD KIT CAR THAT FALL A PART, BURN OR BREAK AND WRECK.

PROFESSIAL SHOPS BUILD REPLICAS.

THAT THE FEELING I GOT WHEN I TALKED TO AN INSURANCE COMANY.

To my thinking, A kit hasn't been completed yet where as a replica has been assembled!

My insurance company made it clear:

If I built it in my garage, go away, end of story.

If a "shop" built it, we could talk about the "shop" and their qualificiations.

OkieSnake: Good description!! There was a thread on this topic not too long ago..."Kit car" can have a negative connotation, associated with VWpans and engines a la the Bradley GT!

Instead of Big Block vs Small Block: Shouldn't it be Big Block vs. Little Block? Or Large Block vs Small Block?

Hmmmm?

Default replica....weelllll!!!!!

Real easy answer,
Both legally and for the Insurance Company angle.

A. REPLICA; Built as a replication of the original in all aspects.

Main Entry: rep·li·ca
Pronunciation: 're-pli-k&
Function: noun
Etymology: Italian, repetition, from replicare to repeat, from Late Latin, from Latin, to fold back
Date: 1824
1 : an exact reproduction (as of a painting) executed by the original artist <a replica of this was painted... this year -- Constance Strachey>
2 : a copy exact in all details <DNA makes a replica of itself> <sailed a replica of the Viking ship>; broadly : COPY <this faithful, pathetic replic

B. KIT; An assembly built from a lists of parts, normally not to replicate but to sell at a lower cost.

Main Entry: 1kit
Pronunciation: 'kit
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English
Date: 14th century
1 dialect British : a wooden tub
2 a (1) : a collection of articles usually for personal use <a travel kit> (2) : a set of tools or implements <a carpenter's kit> (3) : a set of parts to be assembled or worked up <model-airplane kit> (4) : a packaged collection of related material <convention kit> (5) chiefly British : GEAR> a container for any of such sets or collections
3 : a group of persons or things -- usually used in the phrase the whole kit and caboodle

Go to the BLACKS LAW Dictionary if you seek the legal interpertation, no more no less, There are a lot of kits out there, very few replicas.

Cool Factory vs. home built???

My insurance company said built by factory was replica... Home built was kit car... Didn't ask about professional builders... BTW, mine was built by Peter and the boys...
