Did any Cobras come with cammers ?
There is a guy in town that worked in a body shop
when these cars came in for repairs , he said he has seen them with cammers in some ! |
Original series Cobras and continuation series Cobras: Not a one came with a cammer originally and I know of no continuation series fitted with a Cammer.
Replica Cobras: There are a small number that have been fitted with Cammers. |
Thanks for the facts ,
For I believe him , I could only guess they were retro fitted . I wonder what happened to them ? |
From what I was able to discern in a fact-finding mission years ago, 427 SOHCs were never offered in a vehicle from the factory; SOME dealers may have installed them in some rich guys' car (one of the original astronauts springs to mind!); my "R Code" friend says he has seen the engine code for the SOHC available in TWO 1966 Galaxies....he has never seen the SOHC in a factory-prepped car....Had a chance to buy an SOHC in the late '70s for $4000....too much money for a kid just out of high school!!!

I read somewhere that the Silver 427 Cobra in the movie Hollywood Knights had a 427 SOHC in it at the time the movie was filmed. It was later removed and replaced with FE 427. There was a recent thread regarding that car too. The engine was not available except through Fords Total Performance Parts network in the mid 60's. Connie Kaletta was one of the early drag racing pioneers who used the engine. The layout and the concept was unique but I think the 9 ft timing chain was the achilles (sp?) heel.
It was more sucessfull in Drag racing than anything else . Shelby even used the engine in a Front motored dragster racing effort too, with I believe Don Prudhome driving it. Rick |
It may not be an original, but I believe that Jay Leno is running a 427 SOHC in his Cobra.

...As stated no original Cobra came from SAI with a cammer, a few were retro fitted. The "Astronaut" engine thing I think you are talking about was Scott Carpenter and his 427 Cobra was stolen and when recovered was missing the engine and trans. He had a boneyard Lincoln 430 and MX large case automatic fitted. I have an old "Shelby Owners Newsletter" in which the author describes attempts to buy that car from Carpenter.
I do not think any 1966 Galaxies came with the cammer. My understanding (I could be wrong) was that a couple of 1964s and possibly 65's had them installed in a vain attempt to convince NASCAR that these were RPO units. It did not work. Another one of the early NASA astronauts had a SOHC Galaxie and Ford tried to use that as proof that there were avaialable to "the general public" YEAH, RIGHT!:D Yes, Jay's M&L Cobra has a cammer now. If I can find the pictures in the old magazine I will post cammer in a Cobra pictures. Rick |
Cammer in Cobra!
As I understand the history on the 427SOHC - Ford designed the engine to compete in NASCAR - the other manufacturer's could not be competetive with the 'cammer' and raised such a stink that these engines were outlawed for NASCAR - hence, they went to the dragstrip and boat racers. I think there were only approximately 600 of these engines built by Ford.
I have a 427SOHC in my ERA cobra that I found new in the crate in an auto parts store - Peter at ERA has one in his car and there is guy in the Pennsylvania area that has another one. Cammers in Cobras
There were no Cobras built with a factory-installed Cammer. There were, however, a number of cars retrofitted with Cammers.
At the very first National Shelby Convention in 1972 (SOA, before SAAC), Carter Gette brought CSX 3270, which he had redone to S/C specs and added a 427 Cammer to. Rumor has it the car would run in the 9's at the strip. At the very first SAAC Convention, in Oakland, CA in 1975, John Bloeman DROVE CSX 3208 to the convention from Colorado, with a Cammer. I recall watching him adjust the timing belt in the parking lot of the Oakland Hilton. I believe Motor Trend did a test on a '64 Ford Galaxie 4-door (!) hardtop that had a Cammer in it. The car was built by Ford for Astronaut John Glenn - it MAY have come down the production line, but it surely was more of a "one-off" special than an RPO (Regular Production Option). A friend of mine from high school built an ERA with a Cammer - it was near-twin to Peter's, all black and stunning. This car was at SAAC Conventions in Charlotte in '93 and Indy in '94. I got an unforgetable ride in it at IRP in 1994. Acceleration was incredible! regards, Jeff |
From the inside.
At a recent car club event for Sunbeam Tigers that Mr. Shelby and company attended I had the oppotunity to talk to some of the guys who built up the Cobras. One of the guys there was the lucky stiff who got the nod to cram the first 427 into a Cobra. He told me the orgional intention was to use the SOHC motor but they dropped that idea when they could not get enough of them.

Are Cammer motors nearly impossible to come by or is it just a matter of being impossible to afford?
|
Both! :D
Have a good one, Dan |
The Nagamatsu Cobra, CSX 3285, which was show cased in the movie, Hollywood Knights, never had a cammer installed--retro or otherwise. That FE has never been out of the car.
|
I stand corrected.

Question for cammer.
How hard was it to fit the 427 SOHC into the cobra you have? I have been told it would take extensive modifications to the foot box area. I guess I am one of the lucky stiffs. I picked up a cammer in an estate sale about a month ago. I have been thinking about putting it in my 40 Ford coupe, thinking the mods to the cobra would be too extensive. Thanks |
Cammer in Cobra!!
Ogasman,
There were no modifications necessary to the foot boxes - the inner fender panels were cut out to take care of the additional motor width. I went with the ERA car, aside from the obvious quality, because they were the only manufacturer that I could find who had the necessary experience with this car/motor combination - the necessary parts for this configuration were molded and in stock at ERA. The motor looks like it was designed to go in the ERA car - very neat/quality build. As a matter of note, there were approximately only 600 of those engines built - I have seen prices ranging from 15K up to as much as 30K+ - sounds like you have found a valuable deal - I know that I think that way about mine - it's a totally awesome ride! Alan Sorkey's cammer is in a CSX4000 series Shelby. There's a Fort Myers friend that has a cammer in a Everett Morrison with a C6 trans. I also saw a cammer in another local Florida Cobra where the entire front end from the windshield tipped forward to make easy access to the engine compartment, I didn't know who's replica this was.

I spoke to Bill Parham of Southern Automotive about 5 years ago when I bought my Superformance. At the time, he had two or three in stock going for 25K apiece, and he strongly advised against buying one when I told him how I wanted to use my car.
But for bragging rights, it's hard to beat seeing one of those rare behemoths in an engine bay. Durt |
It was kind of a fluke, but I live in a small town. After I bought the motor I was able to find the man who origionally bought this motor from Ford. He said he bought it in 67 or 68. It sat for a year, then he said he put it in a Boss 9 car. He said he ran 10.50's in the car with slicks, and no chassis mods. He shifted it at 8,000 RPM!! Not bad for a "stock" motor.
