Cobra weight
I put my Everett Morrision with 351W and 5 spd Tremec on the scales they use for weighing trucks and they told me 2800 lbs. I thought that was about 200 lbs high. What is the weight of other Cobras ?
|
Heres one of a couple of threads that dealt with that question.
http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/show...ighlight=weigh Is the EM a longer wheel base car than the standard 90"? Even a couple of inches in extra length generally adds several hundred pounds in over all wieght. FFR seems to be about the lightest replica around, low 2000's. "Thin" fiberglass makes the biggest difference. Unlined trunk, hood, inside fenders, etc. also have an impact. The longer wheel base cars (Excalibur, Classic Roadster, Stallion, etc.) will be in the 2700-2800 range. As the car becomes "nicer" with paneling, fender skirts, trunk and hood liners, more heat shielding, etc. this all adds weight. The "glass" on the Classic Roadsters is a little thicker than most, a robust build! But you "pay " for it in more ways than one. 351 generally adds 100 pounds over a 302. Pretty amazing considering the original FIA cars were darn close to 2000 if not 1900 pounds when race ready! Ernie |
Mine weighs 2797# with 24 gal gas.
|
I was told by the FFR Engineer that mine should weigh about 2,250 lbs wet. I only weigh 140 lbs. What some of you guys would call a light weight%/ I am the equivalent of a small block, compared to his FE bretheren.
Not too bad uh? |
At DVSFIII, my FFR which had a 302 at the time, with a completely full tank of fuel, weighed in at 2129. Now with the 351, I'm guessing somewhere closer to 2220.

My Hunter weighed 2485 with 3/4 tank of fuel(about 12gallons). Engineer Ed put his Live Axle FFR on the same scale on the same day and he was about 200# less.
The engine is a Iron Head 302 with a Tremec 3550 and a McLoed bellhousing. The Tremec is about 50# heaver than Ed's T-5 and the Mcloed is about 25# more than his aluminum T-5 bell. The Wheels are Crager SS wheels which probably weigh about 8# each more than the typical 17" wheels that Ed was running. I would bet the body and inner tub on my Hunter is close to the weight of the FFR body and inner aluminum but My hood and trunk are fully lined so that probably adds about 40# over his FFR. He did not have hood hinges and his rear hinges are probably about 10# less than my hinge and support tubes. I also have a 16 gauge floor pan vs the FFR aluminum floor pan add 50# Here is a rundown Tremec vs T-5 add 50# McLoed vs aluminum bell add 25# 4 heavy wheels x 8# add 24# Hood and trunk liner add 40# 6ga steel floor vs aluminum add50# Trunk and hood hinges add15# That adds up to about 204# which is about how much lighter his car is than mine. I have heard that the EM body is very thick and very heavy. Me and my 14 year old son could pick up the Hunter body by ourselves with me getting the heavy end. My guess is it was about 200# sans the hood, trunk and doors. |

My ffr with 12gal of gas was 2176 at the fling...

If you can stay under 2500 pounds in "street trim", your doing good!
Ernie |
At Run and Gun one week ago my B&B weighed in at 2685 pounds w/ about 10 gals. I was really disappointed because I thought I was under 2500 pounds. But I am running a 428 FE w/ 2X4 carbs (everything except the block is aluminium), Toploader w/ a lakewood bell, Steel Bassett wheels, etc.

I wonder what I am going to end up weighing....
All aluminum engine, no wiper motor or linkage, no passenger seat, fiberglass race bucket for driver, aluminum differential housing, cut down Lexan windshield, electric water pump, no carpeting. Add for dry sump - about 30 pounds. |
I assume your going to put my "trim" in that thing down the road? The Kirkhams/Shelby alloy cars are in fact on the light side! And with your component selection I'd think staying under 2500 is likely.
Ernie |
Kirkham states 2250 pounds with an iron block and full trim.
|
I always wondered HOW the original Cobras could be SO light. Gotta be the alloy body I guess!
Ernie |
At the Fling, my EM with 15 gals of gas and junk in the trunk and a 428 and toploader weighed 2832.

Unique roadster with all iron 351 Cleveland 2530, 45/55 dist.

A chubby 2570 for mine....

light weigth
In race ready trim, 1980 lbs. Then again, no heater, radio, windshield wipers, etc.

I have not weighed my JCF slabside but will soon. My Beck Lister recently scaled at 1,992 pounds with about six gallons of gas on board. I think the only consistent thing about kit car weight is that it's always more than you think it will be. I did the all-alloy motor on my Lister, aluminum-cased Muncie, lightweight battery, ultra-short battery cables, etc. in an effort to keep things as light as possible, and figured she'd probably come in closer to 1,900 with all the fluids on board, but as you can see I was off by 100 pounds--
