trctrdrvr,
You said this.... "as I understand it I can go ask for an extension the only stipulation that I can see is you must complete the paper work in the year you started or you default on your money and start again the following year".... Are you positive that this is true? I have most of my components but may not be able to complete my car because of commitments at work. On the other hand, I don't want to work all year on the car not knowing if I can get an SB100 number next year. I'm thinking about getting a number while they are available, but I don't want to start the process over and pay the fees again if I don't finish by 12/31/04. |
AN UPDATE!
Today January 16th. 2004 Friday I too went and got my SB-100 number. As of close of the day, I had Number 303. I am pretty confident in saying this was the last number issued in California today because I was the last person to leave. All the doors were locked, someone actually had to let me out. Unsolicited the clerk waiting on me volunteered the following information. "If you fail to bring your car into compliance before the end of the year, you will loose your fees"!. I would have taken this more seriously if the lady had been more accurate in everything else she had to say. 1-When I got there , first thing out of her mouth was...that there were no more numbers to give! I challenged her and told her she would have no way of knowing that unless she first called Sacramento, unless she had just waited on someone else a few minutes earlier and was involved in the issuance of number 500. She hadn't. 2-She refused to call Sacramento to get the number. She saidd there was no reason to call Sacramento, unless the car was registered first??? if I had the registratin, I wouldn't be there asking for a SB-100 number. 3-She kept on repeating, that the law had changed, and I did not know what I was talking about. I asked her if the law had changed since she came to work this morning or since I came to her window? 4-Made me go home and get more documentation, and after coming back she let me sit at the chair in front of her until 5:10 PM before she would wait on me. 5-After she grudginly typed the information in, and told me she had to override the computer so my information would be accepted (???), told me I owed her $237.00 It is not too often I argue with the State if they want to charge me less, but this is one time I did. I didn't see the purpose in coming back to pay the taxes she had failed to collect. Final bill, a lot more than that!! 6-She told me I should go to the BAR (smog station) next and give the referee the reference number 2004SC303. I emphatically told he that she was wrong, and the referee would insist on the Original certificate that should be mailed from Sacramento within days. She told me NOT to wait for such a piece of document, because I wouldn't be getting any!The we discussed in detail who was right. Me or her. I insisted that I should go to any CHP station to get a VIN number. She argued I couldn't go to ANY CHP, it would have to be the one herfe in our are. Also that I should not go to CHP unless I had gone to BAR first. By this time I am ready to give up my SB100 number in return for assault charges..... 7-About that time I realized it was 1 against 12. I was the only motorist in the entire building. I decided to keep my mouth shut and leave. I had gotten what I had gone there for. I wasn't about to teach an old dog any new tricks. Based on above, I would take what this woman said with a grain of salt. If you pay your registration fees and taxes etc. it is possible that you may loose your registration fees. I can't see how one would loose the sales taxes paid on the car just because the car is not operational by the end of the year.Taxes are 90% of the expenses of registration fees. Be warned. Safe to say, there are no more than 97 left then?
I may have been premature in my speculations that they would be gone in the opening days, but it may be safe to assume they will be gone by the end of January. Feel for the people excited to get their cars on the road beyond that and can't. TURK |
joea,
I did for a moment think I was being "X"ed by Jamie Kennedy. TURK |

You and I are the sane ones. Those who think they would like to know what it fees like to live in New Jersey left the balmy weather of California went looking for 13 degree temperatures. I wonder if that is 13 in the shade?
