I think it is a great looking car ! I hope Ford isn't going to market it to compete in the Viper/vette market. Without a top or roll up windows, the guys who buy vipers and vettes (who like all the creature comforts) will turn their noses up at it.

It does look very similar to the 350z. Other than the stripes and the nose area, I see no real resemblance to the Original....Unlike the GT-40, which looks very close to the original and were I think they may have even better than the orignal.

The design is too tame for me, I prefer the agressive lines of the 427 ( lots of character). Dodge did the same thing to the new Viper, were they made a tamer version> the SRT-10, it is more production freindly ( Orignal Vipers and GTS were very much hands on in the production and the new ones are not). I own a GTS and will be hard pressed to let it go because I think that they will not make anyting like it again, I am sure I am going to feel the same about my Kirkham

It's not nearly as aggresive looking as the 65. It needs more hips. I don't think I care much for the dashboard and gauges. I think it does a fair job at capturing the essence of the Cobra...I do think "Cobra" when I look at it. The roll bars are a little too Z4 or Viperish. Of course it's missing an FE! Cool looking motor though.

Reminds me of a Series one in a way...and thats not a good thing!
I am a bit disheartened by the style, but would forgive it IF the V10 delivers some a$$ kicking performance.....
I DO like the size...judging by the photo with the Old Crank. And the interior looks OK to me.
I wonder about pricing....will it be a 'Vette competitor, or will Ford go nuts and let it go into the stratosphere?

I agree with Maxrpm. Handsome is as handsome does. The original car combined race-winning performance with a stunning body. This resembles a Cobra the way the new T-bird resembles the '55-57's: it uses a few obvious styling cues with everything rounded off. Maybe the new T-bird is faster than the old one. I don't know. Don't care. Maybe the new Cobra will be faster than the original, but it really doesn't matter to me. It would look so much better if only it hadn't been done better before. Isn't it disappointing that the best Detroit can do is to offer lukewarm rehashes of previous successes?

RaceDeck 01-04-2004 09:38 PM

Price?:

Just try to buy a GT-40 at the suggested $139,995.... I would guess that if they acutally come out with the new cobra with a V-10 it will be at a stout price $65- $80 K

Doesn't do a thing for me. Don't like it at all!

Front view (straight on) and the car just looks stupid. The snout forms a frown. The headlights look droopy.

The whole theme of the car seems to be boxy, about as different as you can get from the original!

The back of the car looks like somebody kicked it with their size 12's.

Nope, doesn't work for me.

Excaliber 01-04-2004 10:36 PM

When the Viper first came out it had an "excuse" for a top. I think it was a couple of years down the road before they really addressed that issue.

The point is: The car sold like hot cakes and generated a lot of excitment as "lacking" as it was.

Were all a little spoiled here. We KNOW what a Cobra should look like. But we are not the masses. I think if this new Cobra is turned loose it will "sell like hot cakes".

Compete against the Vette? Man, thats a tall order! Maybe in the short term, but it will need additional "creature comforts" to make it in the long run (with the "masses"). As has happened with the Viper along the way.....

Can it carry 2 sets of golf clubs?? :)

If it can, I am all for it.

I guess you are in because:

The interior features blue carbon fiber racing seats and a beautiful aluminum dashboard outfitted with toggle switches similar to those found in the Ford GT. There is plenty of legroom as well—more than in a Crown Victoria!

Who Will They Market To?

If the "new" Shelby Cobra doesn't go over with the Viper/Vette/Barrett-Jackson-buy-your-trophy-wife- a-$150K-Elanor-Replica crowd, then who??

It seems like the Original Shelby Cobra enthusiasts are non-plussed.

Ford really needs to get rid of J Mays. They could send him to BMW. Check out the windshield frame/ A pillar on the new car. It looks just like a Brink's armoured car. This makes Chris Bangle's work seem positively elegant!

But then again, what the hell do I know??

PGreenSVT 01-04-2004 11:46 PM

I agree that it captures the essence of the Cobra. It doesn't look like the original, it isn't a replicar, it is a 2004 repeat of the formula with 2004 hardware. I think it comes of well. As for performance a high winding v10 40 valve mill pusing 605 horses sounds like a blast to me. This car is zero threat to the 427 market. I'd love to have either in my garage. Having never had the pleasure of owning a 427 S/C and probably not able to afford the new one either I'll have to hold out to see what the Shelby touched Mustang turns out to be. If it's a similar modern interpretation of the 67 GT500 I was lucky enough to own it's mine.

It makes a helluva lot more sense for Shelby to put his remaining efforts into these type endeavors than trying to shake up the 427 market. I say well done and keep at it Shel!
