What do you guys think about my idea on the mounting plate....two bolts would hold it, wouldn't you think?

blykins 01-04-2004 12:26 PM

Well, I've boogered the threads on the stud with the vise-grips...but I could run a die over it and clean them up. I wonder if I could run two nuts down and lock them together....then use a breaker bar to get it out?

Rick Parker 01-04-2004 12:29 PM

The attaching points should be triangulated that's why they use 3 mounting points. You can get this out if you go about it the right way, a screwdriver probably wont allow enough force (leverage) to be generated. Hang in there.

If the vise grips didn't work USE HEAT and penetrating oil
A breaker bar will shear it off.

Soak it and walk away for a while.
SOAK IT SOAK IT SOAK IT HEAT HEAT HEAT TAKE YOUR TIME

That sucker will come out. Now that you have the bolt exposed, weld a piece of 3/8" round stock in the " T " position. Use the Kroil I will be happy to send you if you will e-mail me your address. Go slow, be patient.

Dave, you ever use the Kroil?? IF not let me know and I will send you a can. The stuff is unblieveable!!!!! !!!!!

I have cracked cast Iron by heating it. Caution

Chuck

blykins 01-04-2004 12:56 PM

Could I weld a socket on the end of it, then use an impact wrench? I really hate the thoughts of heating that thing....I've already got the tranny together and ready to put in the car...that's all I need is a cracked tailhousing.....

Chuck Nickloy 01-04-2004 01:06 PM

You need to go slow! The impact will probally twist the bolt off again. It needs to be worked back and forth just a little at a time until you can get the penetrating oil working for you. Patience grasshopper.

Blykins,

DO NOT use an impact .....wrong kind of energy....you want EEAASSEE it out..... A vise grip will snap it off now,,,Kroil and heat in alternate will let it come out.

Good luck ,KK

blykins 01-04-2004 02:03 PM

Alright...I got it. Like you all stated, it needed penetrating oil and heat. I finally got fed up, stuck it on the front of the four-wheeler and drove it up to the shed where the torch was...put a little heat on it, more penetrating oil, and a pair of vice-grips twisted it right out. I feel a lot better now. I was getting frustrated and very impatient.....

I wanna thank all of you for your input. I knew I could count on you....

And thanks Mr. Kirkham...that was a nice offer you made. You're a good guy....I don't care what Brent Fenimore says about you. :)

KobraKarl 01-04-2004 02:16 PM

Good job........way to dodge the bullet

blykins 01-04-2004 02:24 PM

Listen....what's that sound.....ah....it's the sound of "We are the Champions" playing in the background.....

Fox 01-04-2004 03:16 PM

And that right there, is what makes this site so cool.

Thanks -John

Blykins: Did you ever get the feeling that somewhere, some skunk (or opossum) was laughing his head off at you? lol!!!

blykins 01-05-2004 12:57 PM

Yes, I have given a conspiracy theory some thought...maybe the possum's friends sneaked in and put some red Loc-Tite on that stupid bolt...hehehehe

Putting all varmints aside, all that matters is that I kicked that tailhousing's butt....

RLC 01-05-2004 07:39 PM

best way to get it out!
Put a snug fitting nut on the stud, Weld the nut to the stud, let cool, rapp it with a hammer, wrech it out.

If that dont work, take a pencil and paper and drawl it out!%/
