Was the Gas cap cover placed in trunk of the 427 on some cars?

Was the Gas cap cover placed in trunk of the 427 on some cars?

Last night on Muscle Car, Mr. Dupont ( I believe it was him) who apparantly has quite a car collection showed off his original 427. Nice. But interestingly it had the gas cap and nozzle inside the rear trunk and no outward sign on the body of a gas cap. He claimed that many 427s were built this way.

Is this true?
