Relocating, South Carolina?

Every winter about this time, me and the Big Boss Lady start talkin' about relocation. Got the place in NC, on Giligans Island(Avon on Hatteras) But we'd crack up there in the winter time. Been thu SC on the way for bike week in FLA, many times, and fish'n at San-tee-Cooper, but what about the rest of the state, how's the tax structure, real estate prices ,etc. I'm thinking western SC. Any input from SC residents?

Dear Mr. Bruce,

Welcome to SC. We moved down here to Greenville about 10 years ago after stints in Atlanta, Clearwater, Washington, DC area (Va.) and love it SC. The upstate (as the western part of the state is called) is a great place to live.

We have easy access to the mountains and the bach is only ~ 3.5 hrs away. Weather is great, but it does get hot and humid in August.

Taxes are inexpensive, compared to most of the country, but of course vary upon the locale. Real estate also varies considerably, depending on location. Just check out websites for info on the areas that you are interested in.

Hope this helps!

Bets Regards,

Keith

Bruce, I moved here from Erie in '86. I have never regretted it, the Carolinas are a great place to live! Great people, nice landscape, reasonable cost of living. Al Adkins will send you some good info, he lives about 2 hours from me.Good luck, let us know what you decide.

And the #1 reason for moving south..... You can drive your Cobra all year!

Chet
So much #$&%$ snow I can't even get the car out of the garage.

maxrpm 01-26-2004 10:12 AM

WHAT the heck??

What's going on down there!??? Every NY winter I daydream about getting all my important stuff (my cobra) & running away to the Carolinas, its' what gets me through. But I just saw the Weatherchannel and the pictures from the Carolinas were depressing. Tell me it's not true! Has Cobra-cruising been canceled? So much for that whole "global warming" crap....

If your trying to get rid of winter, even in Florida you have to go south of Tampa or you might as well stay where your at.

We enjoy a little snow now and then;it is always short lived and it reminds us southern boys why we stay in the south.I lived in Columbia most of my young life(too hot) Charleston for 11 years(too many hurricanes)Greenville for 14 years(just right). We have 4 seasons and none are too extreme;close to Atlanta and Charlotte as well as mountains;traffic is easy and housing affordable. chuck

i have lived all over, moved to Upstate SC, not too far from Charlotte, NC, about 8 years ago, from Kansas.

I just love living here. So do my kids, they don't plan on ever leaving the coast. So much to do, so close to just about everything. Mountains, seas, places like Charleston, Savannah, or up to DC, and endless back roads to enjoy.

I love the fact that i can be out in my garage every day, although, sure enough today, , snow and ice, which we get once or twice a year, but generally all i need to be outside is a sweatshirt. I can BBQ every day of the year, too.

I just think i can get more out of every day here than in other places i have lived. Plus, here in SC, the law doesn't hassel citizens. Want to carry a concealed, no problem. Want an engine without emissions or smog checks, no problem. Fine colleges, too.

Just the place for me.

Well... maybe not all year... Here's a picture of "The Beater" in my back yard as of five minutes ago. Rest assured this is quite rare down here. DuPont actually closed the plant a few minutes ago! Talk about rare occurances!

RACER X #99 01-27-2004 06:09 AM

Bruce,
I'm thinking of moving to AZ in the winter and NYS in the summer.
I can buy houses in both states for what I can sell my shack here in NJ for and still have money left over for race gas at Firebird and Watkins Glen.

Snow blowers and lawn mowers for sale cheap.

Cranky

I'm thinking of Tennesee myself. Some of my old customers moved just outside of Johnson City. They love it. I'm sick of New York. Too cold in the winter, too hot & humid in the summer. Not to mention real estate prices, ridiculous taxes and too many attitudes. Anyone from Tennesee here?

maxrpm 01-27-2004 06:38 PM

You left out traffic & Hillary's in charge!

Hal Copple 01-27-2004 06:56 PM

tom, there are lots of amateur track events at Robeling Road track. I know the Audi guys and BMW guys run there a lot. Or you can come to Carolinas Motorsports park, aka Kershaw. 45 min south of me. I live near charlotte, nc, and get down to HH once or twice a year. Love to drive around the classy places, where the multi-million dollar boats tie up.

you will love it.

someday, i may retire there.
