Less,
I would suggest doing a lot of research into these kits before jumping in. There are many manufacturers' of Cobra "kits". Most don't supply just a chassis and body. Many are also sold as rollers, i.e. they come basically complete, less engine and trans.

You should decide what you want with your Cobra, and what is important to you, then research which kit will get you there.

If you want to use Mustang parts, the Factory Five car was designed to accept the Mustang motor, trans, rear, some suspension bits, etc... I'm a little biased towards them since I own one, but they are by no means the only kit out there. There are LOTS of beautiful cars out there. Take your time and choose wisely.

You may want to consider buying an already completed car. The used market is sort of soft and you can pick up a completed car for far less than the cost of building it.

Less;
I strongly suggest you go to the big show at Carlisle, PA before you start buying. It's usually in May and, for a couple of bucks admission and the price of a motel room, you will save yourself many hours of looking and visiting. Most of the Cobra builders go each year and will tell you anything you want to know. Once you get a short list of manufacturers, then you should visit their shops to make your final decision. I spent four years looking and have been to Carlisle four times and, after a lot of agonizing I went with Unique and have no regrets. Check out Carlisle's web site at: carsatcarlisle.com and look for the Kit Car?Replica show.

Less,

What part of VA are you in? We have a very active Cobra group in Northern Virginia/MD/DC. You can visit us at www.capitalareacobraclub.com
If you are not far away, we also meet for breakfast every Sat in Vienna, VA. We'd love to have you join us. There are kits and cars of every make within the club, and someone to talk to about every brand. From your initial post, I would say that Factory Five Racing (FFR) is a good solid starting point for you. There are a large number of them in our club. The Carlisle Kit Car show in May is also a great place to see all of the offerings. Look us up and ask lots of questions! Hope to see you around.

P.S. We could always benefit from Auto Tech Instructors in our group also.

At the Vienna Inn every Saturday arriving at about 0730 out back for BS. We mosey in around 0745-0800. After breakfast, more tall car stories out back. Normally have about 7-10 Cobras show with good weather. The club is really growing, so come on out and enjoy the fun. Plus, you couldn't but a price on the help/advice you will receive.

Like the Dreamer said, Vienna Inn every Sat. Yesterday we still had one driver in a Unique FIA Cobra brave the weather. Yesterday should have been called the Capital Area SUV Club .
If you don't see a bunch of guys out back about 7:45 am just come in and look for the loudest customers in the place. We usually take up two rows of tables. Breakfast is cheap, service is ok, grease is abundant (we call it the "grease-up"), talk is cheap, and pleanty of laughter.
Please come on by next Sat., we would love to meet another Cobra lover.
