Rear View Mirrors - Anything Better
I have the typical dash mounted rear view mirror on my Cobra as well as the driver's side fender mount mirror. I do not know about you but my dash mount is less than adequate for full rear view coverage. The fender mount is fine.
Is there any way to increase the coverage or field of view in the rear view dash mount mirror? I was wondering if there is a convex mirror lens that could be mounted in the existing frame that would provide a wider field of view? I do not want to install anything that would look significantly non-period or authentic. Any Ideas? |

Dash mirror- sucks. Fender mirror- sucks. Together, they still suck.:) I went to Autozone (or Pep Boys?) and bought a small convex mirror (it is maybe 2" tall by 4" wide) for $2.99 that sticks on the windsheild with a suction cup. I mounted it close to the top of windshield and it is much better than either the dash or fender mirrors and it really opens up the field of vision. Plus, with the suction cup you can remove at a moments notice. |
i really like full vision to the rear and sides, so put on a racing convex mirror from Pegasus racing, had the stem cut down, i can see out my rear view mirror now, and being convex, it greatly dilutes the headllight glare from following cars. About 2 by 6 inches. Not very authentic, i guess, but when you want to move over or keep an eye on that sneaky Highway Patrol car two lanes over, easy to do now. I believe you can see what it looks like in my album, a cockpit view.

After experiencing similar, shall we say, "discomfort" with the lack of rear sight, I've decided to tear a page out of the Gumball Rally playbook. To paraphrase the late and great Raul Julia, "Whatsa behinda me....doesn't uh matta!" :D

Like Chaplin, I too bought a small mirror that attaches with a suction cup. Easy on, easy off and can be positioned where you want it.
I also found at Pep Boys a convex lense, the same diameter as the fender mirror. It attaches with sticky tape and greatly increases your field of vision. |

Hal Copple uses a conves racing mirror and someone else mentioned mirrors at Motorsports International but their web site is under construction. You may also want to look at aftermarket mirror that attach on a non permanent basis over the existing mirror. DonC |

What about the Raydots that mount on the windshield frame?I was planning on using them so I didn't have to drill my fender.I have seen a Raydot used on numerous classic english cars on the dash as well.

You can get Raydyots in convex...I use one for the middle and it works great. As Hal notes with the Pegasus (which look great IMO...Turk had one on the ERA), the convex mirror really cuts down on headlight glare. The two side ones are mounted on the windshield frame via highly sought-after Buckley mounts.

Raydyot convex mirrors
I am about to order side mirrors. Are the Convex ones mild, meaning they don't have the distortion one gets with the store-bought, add on round ones? If I want that much curve, I can just go to Pep Boys/Kragen and use the add ons.

Not bad at all...and that's why I got them (same problems with the stickons you cite). They are very linear, and they don't scratch as easy. I don't think they are good for the side because they do decrease the size of the image a bit much for my taste, which makes it tougher looking through the wings...but for the middle, they are really good. |

I the Pegasus racing catalog, in their two page Mirrors, section, they carry a brand called SPA. There are convex rectangular mirror lenses for sale in two sizes. I was wondering if I could just attach one of those convex lenses to my current center dash mounted rear view? I will check into that. I have to go measure the current mirror to see what the fitment would be. Thanks for all Your great Ideas Amigos. |

Make your passenger sit backwards, like in a boat when you're towing a skier. Gotta' be better than the mirrors.

As noted the original style mirrors, whether rectangular or Raydot are terrible.
If you want the mirrors as original get used turning your head before any move while on the road. As a motorcyclist its a habit with me anyway. Better than any mirror. No blind spots. |
CR uses an Americanized rear view mirror, and it works extremely well. But, it's not particularly authentic.
They use a typical GM rear view mirror that uses a glue on mount on the windshield glass. The mirror mounts to the glass mounted mount and is held in place with a setscrew. With an OEM Glass mirror, visibility is great, there is no distortion, no vibration induced distortion, and has the dimmer lever so you're not blinded by following traffic. For side mirrors, bullet mirrors can be had with 4 1/2" lenses and wide angle view for passenger side. They're about $30 each from europaspares.com. |
I have the original style dash mount and RayDots on each side. They had just introduced the convex version when I called to order, so I got one for the passenger side.
They work well in my opinion, plus they're extremely lightweight. |

The Buckley goes on with one bolt...the one between the wind wing mounting points, while the one Motorsports sells is mounted at two points and is longer...it's also polished, while the Buckley can be polished, but is finished in a brushed arruminum. Its beauty is in it's minimalistic approach...like its creator. I don't have any closeups right now. |
