Super Bowl and the Ford GT

The first commercial, I think, of Super Bowl XXXVIII, was an ad showcasing the Ford GT. Outstanding commercial. That car, despite its forty year old design, is still outstanding to look at. Still better looking than any of the new supercars out there. Makes me wish I had mine back.

LURK 02-02-2004 08:35 AM

There's been a link floating around that has given us a look at the ad for a couple of weeks. Damn fine car in the hands of a good driver!

I have a colleague who works for J. Walter Thompson (who produced the ad)- told me that it was shot at Thunderhill. During filming, speeds topped out at 140+ with the driver never going out of 4th gear- and outran the chase helicopter attempting to film it.

I thought the disclaimer at the bottom of the ad was clever.

It said "Clearly a professional driver........"

Paul Gillespie 02-02-2004 08:50 AM

It has been nice watching on my computer but it was awesome watching it at 61" with surround sound! Heck the game was somewhat watchable this year too.

Cal Metal 02-02-2004 10:26 AM

Do you guys have a link to the commercial?

Cal, your memory is short if you "really" want your old one back. Remember what you told me about "claustrophobia", and "driving around in a shoebox?":3DSMILE:

Besides, I've invested about $217.00 in the car since I acquired it a year ago, so the sales price has increased substantially.

As far as the commerical, I thought it was magnificent. It was the first car commercial since the Trans Am one of a few years ago (where the black T/A sucks another car up into it's Ram Air scoop) that made me want to get into the car and go drive fast. One part of me likes the new GT, one part says, "Why can't Ford do some original designs instead of going retro on everything (Mustang, GT40, T-bird, Bronco show truck, etc. etc.)?"

T. Kirkham posted a link on Gasholes

,,,same as above, the link is apparently down now. It WAS working before the game and you COULD download it (which I did).

Ford site will not allow download.

Ford GT Commercial is HERE along with a gallery of photos, more videos and wall papers. They've got some cool historical videos also.

Snakeeyes:

I 've gone on a weight reduction program since the sale and I have shortened my height from a super tall, 5'7" down to 5'5". I am ready to get back in the car.

Regarding that shoebox comment, I checked and it wasn't the GT-40 I was referring to. It was the house I was living in. I'll check the language in the contract. There was something about reversion if your garage became too full.

Cracker 02-02-2004 12:52 PM

Hey Shortie - I mean Cal - don't forget those synchronizing instructions (with pictures or may not be interested in reading through it) when you get a chance. BTW, since you have shrunk I stand a full foot taller than you - you probably couldn’t reach my pedals! Thanks again for your help.

Cal Metal 02-02-2004 01:21 PM

Uncle Cracker:

They are being sent as we speak. The bad news, however, is that the one carb that keeps pulsating and will not synchonize? I would suspect a bent throttle shaft (ouch). Pull it off and look. If it is bent, it might be easier to replace the carb.

snakeeyes 02-02-2004 02:22 PM

Cal,

Bad news. I've done some preliminary ergonomic calculations and have determined that, at your newfound height, or more correctly lack thereof, you will no longer be able to see over the steering wheel. I would offer you the GT40 back at a most reasonable price, but morally I cannot allow myself to do so as you would present a danger to yourself and others if you tried to drive it without being able to see where you were going.

Sorry. As a consolation I can offer you some Florida wetland, or a vintage bridge in New York, also at eminently reasonable prices...:JEKYLHYDE %/

I am Forty and can Buy one of these cars that were Rolling around when I was on a Big Wheel. they clearly are targeting the 35-65 year old crowd with these vehicles. I also think Bill FOrd who falls in that number might have something to do with recreating his own youth. Why you ask? Because he CAN!!

THE FORD GT AD WAS AWSOME, TO BAD ITS ALMOST IMPOSSIBE TO ORDER ONE. I KNOW A LARGE CONTRACTOR WHO BUYS 100 FORD CARS AND TRUCKS EVERY THREE YEARS AND CAN'T EVEN GET A RESPONSE. THE TRACK AT THUNDERHILL WHERE IT WAS FILMED (NORTHERN CALIF) IS GREAT. ALMOST A HOME TRACK FOR THE NOR-CAL SHELBY AS THEY PUT UP 50K TO HELP ITS INCEPTION. MORE THAN AFEW MEMBERS WHO POST HERE (MYSELF INCLUDED) HAVE HAD CLOSE CALLS THERE. RIGHT RANDY!!

Having seen and sat in one of Lee Holman's identical replicas of his GT 40 MKII's, at a cool half million apiece (down to the last rivet!), i was not initally impressed. But as the glowing magazine tests and comparisons have come out, i have really come to admire the car for a fast, formidable GT car. I'll never have one, but i would love to see one for real. But i have significant doubts they will ever sell anywhere near the projected yearly production.

I may well be proven wrong, but there is a pretty slim and very conjested market for $150,000-$200,000 cars.

Durt 02-02-2004 11:54 PM

I would imagine that the primary purpose of this vehicle - initially at least - will be to get people into Ford showrooms to buy Mustangs and the like. When the Viper first debuted, they were impossible to buy as well. I think the GT will be a sales tool for at least two years, and the sticker price will be fiction, if you can get your hands on one.
Me? Make mine Gulf baby blue with an orange stripe. I don't need this old house anyway.

Durt

Excaliber 02-03-2004 12:13 AM

Hal, I'm surprised at your sales estimate, but I'm listening!

I think the total build number will be small enough to leave plenty room for all the buyers that will TRY to get one. In year three? Well, I guess we'll see in due time!

I bet they will hold their value over the years too!

WoW, on one show;

The Ford GT and Janet Jackson nipple!

And they say that there's nothing on TV anymore... life is good!

TERRY M KRYSTOFIAK 02-03-2004 06:39 PM

SINCE SOMEONE ELSE BROUGHT UP THE "NIPPLE" I HAVE A QUESTION & OBSERVATION. SINCE THE NFL, CBS ET AL. SEEM TO BE SO OFFENDED BY THE < THAN 1 SEC. FROM A DISTANCE "FLASH" ONE WONDERS WHAT HAD THE STRONGER SEXUAL, OFFENSIVE "NOT FOR FAMILY VIEWING". THE "NIPPLE", OR THE 30 SEC. ADD FOR CARL JR. WITH THE GIRL (WAS SHE SOMETHING) RIDING THE MECHANICAL BULL. WE SAW THE BURGER ALMOST AS MUCH AS THE "NIPPLE".WONDER IF $2.3 MILLON MADE THAT LESS OFFENSIVE. WHAT A GREAT ADD TO REMMEMBER THE GOOD OLE DAYS!! STILL TAKE THE GT ADD THOUGH.
