Hal said a lot. I am a newbee. I registered a year ago and didn't come back until 2 weeks ago. It wasn't for the reasons addressed here, but the CACC website forum was easier for me and not as big to figure out. I finally took delivery of my new/first Cobra two weeks ago, so I have many things to figure out, ask about, and share with others. CC is a great place for info. It took about a day to figure out how to navigate and what sections were of interest to me. It only took a couple of days to figure out who were the helpful posters and who were the Mr. Attitude posters.

One thing I learned in life is to have thick skin. It is a trait that would do well for anyone. In a group this size, there is always going to be a couple of sour grapes. Hey, that's reality... why fight it. None of these "self righteous better than the other guy self appointed experts" can say anything that would get through my skin. I hope other new people to CC that read this post can apply the same "Thick Skin" approach if they run across one of these type of posters.

The knowledge available on CC is amazing, and fortunately most people here realize that it would be a terrible thing to waste. For the rare few (and I do mean rare) who don't have the temperment to read and or answer constructively to a new member's post, I have a suggestion. Maybe Brent can open a new forum topic called "For self appointed experts only, no stupid or basic questions allowed". This would keep the new unsuspecting member from posting in the wrong forum, and then there would be a special place that both experts could share their knowlege (or just argue about who knows more than the other one).

Just think how boring and dull that forum would be. The vacuum pressure it would create would make it implode. Thank goodness there is no such place here, and thank goodness that because of the size of CC, there is no chance for that vacuum pressure to build up here.

Message to the few that Hal addressed; if you don't like the thread, don't read it! Just move on to the next one. If you look closely at life, it is not the WHAT HAPPENS that matters but the HOW you handle it that counts. Some people need to learn more about the HOW to handle it part.

This subject is interesting; as I've bite my tongue many times over my build period.
It seems like many on this forum are not building, rather have bought. no problem there; but when a newby(me) asks a real question it quite frustrating to be ignored. One example: last spring I was bending tubing- hooking up the lines to the MC; Does the frt brakes go to the front or rear port on a GN powermaster? This forum will know! Posted the simple question and go get some lunch. Rest of the day passes; no answer. 2nd day passes, nothing. Finally in frustration; post of FFR forum, by dinner 5 responses. Ends up being a great discussion of over 30 posts.

And I did do a search. Many times the search comes back"search term under the min word length(3)!! and there are more than three words. I just put in "cam" one word. First 4 findings were; 600cfm carb, main bearings, avg age, date code. May times the search function does work right or this user can't get it to behave.

Other times when asking a "real" question, one will get put down type answer or an opinion, thats fine for the people just kabitsing, but frustrating for someone thats at full stop for lack of an aswer. Sadly, most of the time if I have a building question , I sneak over the FFR forum and normally get a answer.

Sorry for tha rant! Been building proportional the my build time.

I have to agree with Jamo. I do, at times, refer people to the Search engine on CC; particularly, when a question has been asked repeatedly. My reason for doing so is strictly utilitarian, and I don't mean to offend anyone, least of all someone new to the forum. Often times, the question has been asked so many times that, on some occasions, no one will bother answering it. Ron (Computerworks) and I have discussed this and he is working on putting together a FAQ topic list that might help newbies in there search of the most "sought after answers" to the most "sought after questions".

Again, my desire for expediency may have offended someone; my intent was not to be short with the poster, but to simply short cut the process.

A good friend of mine taught me that there are two kinds of people; givers and takers. If you aren't giving......I think that you can figure out the rest....

The use the search is a simple answer but it is not all that great at times. I have used it with great results at times and other times I can't find anything with it. In fact I now have a post in the lounge asking what I am doing wrong. I am not one of the older members of the club but have been here long enough to know when a new person asks what seems to a lot of us to be a dumb question, it is a sign of intelligence that they are asking the question to start with. I even got desperate and went to the FAQ page to see if I could find why I am all of a sudden having so much trouble doing a search. I agree with what Cal Metal said except I hesitate to tell someone to do a search when I can't seem to do one myself any more. And PLEASE don't anyone tell me to do a search to find out how to do a search. :LOL: :eek:

Many of us where newbies at one time or another where we not? At first I was a bit shocked at the way some people treated each other here. Then it finally dawned on my that those individuals generally have a history and that the comments are often more busting of the balls than just being out and out rude.

However, some times folks are just plain rude. I enjoy a spirited debate (some may call it an argument), but when it gets personal it has gone to far.

Search. Search is good advise for a newbie. It can bring them up to speed a lot faster and help them avoid the pitfalls of being a forum member.

The tone in which the search is suggested to me indicates the intent of the suggestion. "Do a search you #^@&ing moron" has a negative feel to it and probably will cause some emotional damage (like the guy that wrote to Kit Car about us). On the other hand "Welcome. You have come to the correct plain for enlightenment. Search and you shall find true knowledge. Return to me when you are one" Has a much more positive feel to it doesn't it? It says 'you are home'.

But of course we all have our moments and we all have our style. We are also handicapped with the written language. The expression of which is an art and many of us are still painting with finger paints. So try not to slam the new people and of course, don't put up with any $hit either!

The guy that wrote the article to Kit Car about the club wasn't ticked off because of being told to do a search. He was known on some other clubs and removed from a couple of them. They published an answer to his article in the January 2004 issue and he hasn't answered back. I agree the way a person is told to do a search can have a negative effect but if they can't get what they want by doing one, then the questions are the only way. I have spent most of today trying to get the search to work for me and Pete did it and found what I wanted. Yet when I typed in the exact same words all I got was a No Response found page.
