Except for the times I've created the problem, I think it's all Jamo's fault, see: http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/show...threadid=18990

bmalone 02-03-2004 12:29 PM

Since when have we become so offended if told to use the search button. I was told on one of my first posts, as I'm sure many others were. What's the big deal? I don't recall taking offense to someone telling me that.

Bill, sometimes you just have to step back and take a different look. Some of your posts lately have taken a rather condescending tone. I think some folks were trying to tell you in a nice way because it is often not so easy to see yourself.

ToyCollector 02-03-2004 12:29 PM

Bill,

Hope to be driving it this weekend or next with uncoated exhaust, then need to get an alignment done. Winter has been brutal here in relevant terms (I know the whole east coast has had it tough weather wise), so I haven't exactly been working overtime on it.

Rick,

The guy that wrote the article to Kit Car about the club wasn't ticked off because of being told to do a search. He was known on some other clubs and removed from a couple of them. They published an answer to his article in the January 2004 issue and he hasn't answered back. I agree the way a person is told to do a search can have a negative effect but if they can't get what they want by doing one, then the questions are the only way. I have spent most of today trying to get the search to work for me and Pete did it and found what I wanted. Yet when I typed in the exact same words all I got was a No Response found page.

Ron :)

I agree completely. I guess I wasn't so much suggesting that we hurt that particular guys feelings (the guy who wrote kit car), but that he was 'damaged goods' or damaged emotionally, before he even got here:LOL:

For some people searches work, for some they don't. But the person won't know if they do or do not unless they try. Some don't even know the option is right there in front of them.

I think most here know me to be helpful. When a newbie posts a question that has hundreds of pages of information I welcome them and suggest a search. If that doesn't work for them or they still have questions, I encourage them to ask. What I don't like is some one that is not willing to help themselves. Fortuniatly, most given the oportunity will.

So yes, answer questions, but also educate them to what the forum can do for them. Hell I just figured out how to use the quote function a couple of months ago!

l did not assume Hals thread targeted anybody in particular.

But this might cover it (following Bills lead here, :D ):

Bill,
Are you too important to apologize for the insensitive post that started this entire fiasco or are you just being too righteous to admit that you should have avoided the "post" button?

Maybe I confused here but who appointed you the supreme, omnipotent moderator of this forum and bestowed the royal eminence of arrogance? I thought that the entire philosophy of this forum was also to help others decide what they wanted and to help others with any problems, questions or issues, even outside the realm of cobras? You've used the forum to ask medical questions with impunity but when a newbie signs on and asks a civil question, one that we've all asked in one form or another, you snipe the guy? I also particularly enjoyed the response to Steve Sunshine's CSX sale. Now you're also an omnipotent broker that must be summoned for assistance?
Maybe it's time to get that rectal-cranial inversion syndrome addressed. I thought you were brighter than that.

TC,

Good deal. take some pictures for the rest of us to drool over....

Bmalone,

Never meant to be, perhaps someone should have mentioned it when they saw it happening.

Excaliber,

Funny, but for many growing up (for a period of 8 years), I was "The Shoe Man".

Look, I don't think this thread was about Bill, but it pretty much sums up the way I have felt many times with regards to the way people respond to newbies. Hal summarized an issue that has happened many times by many different individuals, so lets not make this about any one person.

Hal brought up great points, and I hope people have learned from his perspective.

mrmustang 02-03-2004 12:46 PM

Dan,

When your right, your right, but when your not........................I have never been banned, then allowed back like soneone else I know. You want me to leave, I'll leave, all you need to do is ask............

I have said "try a search" in the past (terrible admission). What I try to do now is supply a search term that will work for the asker of the question. A good example was a guy asking about "pre-oilers" recently - suggested he tried a search on "Accusump" which turned up a lot of material for him.

You can refer a newbie to a search without appearing stand-offish, just takes a little thought.

As for folks for whom the search engine appears not to work, take a close look at the search definitions - e.g. subject in title only or body text and title, dates to delimit the search, forums in which to search, etc. It has usually worked for me, but there again I was used to some of the older web search engines, where you had to think about your search term a touch. I never knew there were so many people interested in cats.

Ron61 02-03-2004 12:47 PM

Rick,

Agreed. Use the search function if you can get it to work. I have always had an on and off time with it. Some times I can do searches and they work great. Today I can't even find my own name by using it. As for the quote function, I actually figured that out a long time ago by just clicking it and trying. I now use the test section that Brent put in for people like me to test in so I don't clutter the main forums with my attempts to do new things. But I have to admit, I am really snowed as to why the search function hates me. That is why I am a little hesitant to tell anyone to use it, as that advice coming from a person who can't seem to use it himself is a little on the paradox side. **)

Ron  :o

I think it is a mistake to single out Bill.

Who truly feels they can cast the first stone? Not me.

Hal brings up good food for thought. He does not appear to suggest an inquisition;)

Ok, Bill, since I am just as much an a$$hole, I will tell you next time. :D

We have a test section! ;)

Agreed. Search works great for me. That is how I found this place (not sure if that is proving the point of search working great or not;) ).

Dano, Bill...no mas.

Good thread that was winding down with some humor and the main points made by Hal intact. Let's leave it that way.

Dan Semko 02-03-2004 01:09 PM

Bill,
I don't want you to leave. You have valuable contributions to share with everyone. You are right, I was banned and knew when and where to admit that I was wrong and apologized appropriately. That was the point of my above post.

I thought we had bestowed the dubious distinction of "royal eminence of arrogance" on Ron and Jamo? :)
