Did you forget something there, DV??:JEKYLHYDE

Having owned two black cars, a Cobra(which was a DV creation, solid black, no stripes), and a '65 Mustang show car(which won it's class at the Charlotte Mustang Nationals), I think it's the best and worst all in one. NOTHING looks better than a car painted black....done right. BUT, nothing is more work to keep it looking good, either.

Everyone should own one black car in their life, just to understand. You will prolly either have more, or, never, ever, have another!

Let the debate rage on...

I like black and have had one solid black car. As stated above, if kept clean it shined like a diamond but you could see a fingerprint from a block away. A friend has a black Cobra with silver stripes and it really draws raves every time he drives it. Of course it helps that at each stop light he jumps out and runs around it with a dust rag.

I think black Cobras have as much rights as any other Cobra.

I was either thinking a solid black...or like Terry go the Indigo Blue route. All of course with no stripes. Definitely meatballs or rookie stripes, but no big stripes.

I've posted several times here trying to get an answer, but to no avail...I've never seen a picture of an original car with original paint (aside from a Daytona Coupe) with stripes. I can't figure out why everyone does it. I'm sure it's something I'm missing...because everyone knows I'm a few fries short of a Happy Meal...but no one has ever been able to answer me.

I'm gonna post some pics now and shut up.

Mid-way thru the 1964 racing season, SAI started using the two wide stripes that we know today as LeMans stripes. The factory 289s that ran SCCA were striped this way... as well as the King Cobras. The FIA racers stayed monochrome, with most having the fender-to-fender team stripe.

The fliptop raced at Nassau with LeMans stripes and CSX3002, the first 427, was born with stripes. That "look" is what is emulated by the replicas.

Since there was no factory 427 car raced, the independent Comp cars chose their own monochrome paint schemes.

Thanks Ron...I knew I had to be missing something...but I never could get a solid answer.....

Thanks.

I think black kicks a$$. Doesn't mean you can't run the car hard; just have to spend more time keeping it clean.

To me, it does enhance the sinister appeal of the car.

blykins 02-10-2004 08:32 AM

So the street and S/C cars were stripeless too then?

Streets, for sure. Maybe a rare exception, but they were painted at AC in standard colors.

S/Cs were built to order, and painted in L.A. Whatever color you wanted. Some were striped.

No S/C was originally black. Black was an on-again, off-again street color.

Here's a nice shot of Evan's car...

How about black with gold stripes, I always wondered if it was first on the cobra or stang, never saw this on real cobra, just in a few pics..........

computerworks 02-10-2004 09:23 AM

There is at least one black/gold striped original running around in SoCal...

Ned's S/C (3042) is Sapphire Blue w/ gold stripes (as delivered)..but that was in 1967...after the Mustang Hertz stripes.

More than one S/C was originally shipped painted all gold.

REAL 1 02-10-2004 09:48 AM

Ron is correct that no original S/C came in black from SAI. But it was an available color choice so it is a correct color. I guess no one picked it back then for their S/C. What shame. Shelby, again did paint his twin paxton S/C Raven black.

Gold? yuck! What a shame.

Black Cobras are wonderful and the maintenance isn't as bad as many thinks, if you have a great polish system. ( I'm very happy with the Zaino products )
Also to repair litte rock damages is more easy than on a two tone metallic color.
Now I would like to duplicate the "Terlingua Racing Team Cobra" if I find one person that can produce the static decals.
