What do you guys think about black Cobras?
 

You don't see many around....what do you think about how they look?

Grumy old geezers, aren't we:LOL: I hate to say this because Black is one of my favorite colors on cars but for some reason it seems to take away from the Cobra body. I definately considered it but after looking at a number of black Cobra's I realized that lighter color would be much more appealing to my eyes.

While at a local indoor auto show last weekend I had the opportunity to check out an all black Superformance.......the paint was still absolutely gorgeous even under all of the lighting in the convention center. I say still because the car was 4 years old.

2 cars down was another manufacturer (will not mention the name) that had a car on display (apparently their show car)........man, the black stipes on that car looked like sh!t. Since the body color was a shade of titanium it really did not show any of the flaws.

I can now see how they claim to be $10K less than Superformance......the paint cost alone has to be a bundle.....ooops!!!!

No doubt, black shows much more scratches and marks than any other color. But it is gorgeous when shiny and besides, all colors will show scratches to some degree. How important is it to you for the car to be 100 point show perfect? If it's really important, as they said, you'll have to trailer it a lot. Otherwise, paint it black, care for it as best you can and just drive and enjoy!!

Klayfish is right. You have to make up your mind whether your going to drive it or show it. That's the obvious place to draw the line. My 2 cents:cool:

You can do Black and we have over and over. And you can use the car a lot whit little effort if you use a product called Wet paint this stuff is amazing on black paint bugs don't stick! One of our cars just went through the Barrette -Jackson auction for 60,000 the car was painted six years ago and was driven regurlery. It still looks like the day it was painted

Black needs work, but if it is worked, it is pretty. My old SPF.

Other colors are nice. Alot of Blue w/white stripes, red w/white stripes. Silver is nice. They are all fairly common.

Color is very subjective but there is no color (or lack of color, technically) like black when its clean and well maintained. Nothing comes close in elegance and capturing the sinister personality of the 427SC at the same time. Nothing.

Is it a difficult color to maintain? Yes. But when you learn how its not so bad. Few of these cars sees every day use and abuse anyway.

While there weren't many original 427's in black it was an original color choice (Raven Black that is) and thats what I went with with no stripes. Shelby's own 427 twin paxton Cobra was done in Raven black. I haven't seen another than can match its "presence" and sinister aura just sitting there.

When its clean and shiney, nothing comes close. Nothing.

Also, if you want to duplicate the "60's" finish go with a single stage piant. Base coat/clear coat gives it too much of a "shine" more like patent leather.

P.S. I don't trailer the car as much as some of the characters here would have you believe. In fact I don't think the car saw the trailer once last summer. Spent more time driving it than at shows.

I've owned several black cars in my day (still have a black 540I) and there really is nothing like them WHEN THEY ARE CLEAN. Keeping them clean..........well, that's another story. You can't back out of the driveway without a layer of dust covering the car. Of course, this layer of dust would be on ANY car (it's not like the black cars attract more of it!), but you simply see it a lot more on black than anything else. Get yourself a California duster (and shake out the duster with every pass over the car) and also some Speed Shine from Griot's Garage and a VERY soft cloth. This will help keep the car clean between washes. Keeping a good coat of wax on it is the key, and using some Liquid Ebony once in awhile will help with the swirls. Get a nice car cover as well.
I think a lot has to do with the paint job. I have a buddy with a solid black SPF that's 4 yrs old and it looks as good as the day he bought it. He takes real good care of it, but he's no "waxer" by any means. I think he has over 9000 miles on it. On the other hand, I've seen black cars from other mfgrs, with less miles than my friends car, that look like they washed it with a SOS pad. Swirls and spider cracks all over the place. Whoever you buy from, make sure they do a quality paint job (especially important if you go black).
Don't they say..........Once you go black, you never go back? Well, my car is Indigo........BECAUSE I've done the black thing and didn't want the hassle on the Cobra. It's not a car I want to have to wash all the time!**)
One a side note........If you get the chance, park a solid black (or any dark color) Cobra right next to another Cobra (any color) WITH stripes. Step back and take a look at them facing the front of the cars. The solid colored car looks about a foot W I D E R than the striped car. I just think the solid black Cobra looks mean as hell.........I simply didn't want the chore of keeping it clean.:mad:

With the right bodywork prep & care, a black anything is definetly the most sinister looking car on the road, but a black Cobra/no stripes?? Even Satan would move outta the way! A friends car, painted in Sikkens Black 14 yrs ago, although street driven & raced frequently, is still taking show trophies. Photographed in Hi-Perf Pont. Magazine last year, it's still that nice.
Most importantly blykins, what do YOU think?

I worked in a body shop when i was 15 and 16, I can attest to the prep required for black paint . we used to shoot 20 -25 coats of black laquer ....man nothing looks that good.

On an old classic sedan....and old Mercedes ..I think nothing looks more elegant or as "classy" as a perfect black paint job.

On a Cobra? Im not so sure.....To me , these cars demand a color ......They are not quite subtle enough for black.

How about the dark greens....could be a good comprmise

Black?.............Like a beautiful woman, can be a bit of a pain at times..............But worth it.:D

I painted my car black Imron, with clear Imron over it, no stripes. Car is 6 years old this year, still looks good. Over 8500 miles, and I have never regretted my color choice. I'm not a waxer, but the California duster does keep it looking good.
