Shelby Cobra or Ford GT that is the question

With some questioning the "desireability" of the Cobra today given the choice which would you rather own if you had to choose only one.

A new Ford GT

A new aluminum bodied Shelby Cobra with all the goodies powered by a top notch 427 SO.

Chaplin 03-02-2004 04:24 PM

To make this really interesting, you should add another option: a new aluminum bodied v10 cobra (with appropriate redisgn as depicted by Buzz's drawings, of course:) )

HIQ 03-02-2004 04:28 PM

This decision would keep me up at night for a few weeks.

REAL 1 03-02-2004 04:30 PM

I didn't think of that. Hmmm.

How do you edit the poll?

flipper35 03-02-2004 04:36 PM

Adding the new Cobra to the poll wouldn't have changed my decision.

Edley Rondinone 03-02-2004 06:23 PM

I already HAVE a Cobra. A new Ford GT would complement my Cobra nicely. I think I would like a red one, please.

Scott Smith 03-02-2004 07:15 PM

Gee Evan.
It seems like a simple question deserves a simple answer!

The real current Cobras!
None other than the fibreglass ones built by Shelby (after all, what other cars could make that claim!)

As cool as the new GTs may be, think about who is going to service them!
Do you really want to entrust this fabulous, but complex supercar to the Bozo fixing your Focus/Explorer/Expedition?

I didn't think so!

I did get to inspect one, I was disappointed at the fit and finish.
Halo, perhaps, but Billy-boy better have support in place, or this will be back to bite him, and F.

GT

Johan 03-02-2004 07:37 PM

If it was free, but could not be sold, I'd pick the "Cobra".
If I had to pay, but could sell it, I'd be forced to choose the GT.
If I had a chance to think about it though, I'd buy a AC/Kirkham and a replica GT40 and take the 10,000 left over and rent a race track and have a party.
Both are very cool cars for sure.
Now how am I gonna sleep tonight...?
Thanks Evan !

Cobra zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
GT , Must get to the Glen, Must get to the Glen.

Spoony 03-02-2004 08:33 PM

I can't believe there is a question here. On we on clubGT.com or clubcobra.com. If I wanted the new GT I'd get one, I don't I'm a cobra man through and through!!

MysteryTrain 03-02-2004 09:54 PM

Tough call. If I could only have the one toy? The Cobra offers topless fun for SoCal, advantage Cobra. The GT is a better car, more exotic, less likely to be banned by the United Socialist Republic of California. GT wins.

First I bought a Cobra for all the typical reasons. Looks FABULOUS, fast, VERY cool, great handling, "different", etc.

What I DID NOT realize until AFTER I bought one was how "people friendly" the car is. For some reason, hard to put my finger on, "people" not only love the car they feel it's "approachable". It just seems to "draw" people like nothing I've EVER owned. And mostly NICE folks! Old folks, young folks, women and men, ALL walks of life.

I THINK I would take the Ford GT-40 because it to is VERY cool. BUT, will it be "intimidating" to the "people", like say a Lamborghini or a Ferrari or many other "exoctics" are?

I know when I see a Lambo or a Ferrari at a car show and I want to check it out I'm always a little nervous about what kind of guy/girl might own it? Will I get my hand slapped if I touch it? Will they even want to talk about the car?

I have NEVER sensed that from other people in regards to the Cobra. It just seems to INVITE people to come closer, visit, touch it, ALL kinds of people.

Will the GT be that "friendly"? If not I wouldn't keep it. Half the fun of owning a Cobra is sharing the joy with others!

The GT40 has never done anything for me. The same goes for the Daytona Coupe.

The Cobra wins.

Evan...I edited your poll. ;)

REAL 1 03-03-2004 06:23 AM

Jamo: Thank you.

Thank you all for voting.

Seems most who posted picked the Cobra but the poll #s show different. Odd.

Tough choice for sure. I spoke to my dealer. Most dealers are only getting one. Only 2500 will be made. There are only 4200 dealers. Although I am #3 on the list at my dealer I was informed that the owner will probably keep their GT.

What I can't figure out is why spend all that $$ in developement, milliions for Superbowl ads and then just make a limiited # when demand is there. ?????

I suspect that it will turn out to be another Z8. They say limited production but they end up making more.

...because it did what they wanted...it got you into the showroom.
...and, now...you are on the "dealer's list" as a high-roller.

Chaplin 03-03-2004 06:49 AM

Evan-
If you manage to get a GT, you ARE taking me for a ride:)
