Most used Cobras being sold
On cobracountry.com there are 55 Cobras for sale. 17 are Superformance. No other Cobras come close to that amount. Why are there so many Superformance's being sold? Are there just more of them?
I don't question there quality because I've seen one up close and heard tons of praises, but I do find it odd that more used Superformance Cobras are being sold compared to any other brand.
Thoughts? Comments?
- Matt

Matt,
I drove through your neighborhood last Saturday hoping the noise might bring you to the front door but since I dont' know exactly where you live I didn't know where to stop.
Are you still looking for that big block Cobra?
I have also looked at those on Cobra Country and there seems to be a pretty good supply of used ones. Surely, one of them suits you? Good luck in your search.

Matt...just here in Dallas I know of 2 people who have had I think a total of 7 Superformance Cobras between them and believe me every one of them was flawless with big horsepower. I don't really understand either but I think some people just like the chase and the building part.....as well as buyers that want Cobras that are already done and sorted out. Go figure. I actually cried when I sold my ERA to do another.

Hey Clois, Which neighborhood? In Owasso behind Ron's Hamburgers? Actually last Saturday we were moving. I got a bigger house with a 3 car garage (gotta make room for the future Cobra). I now live in Bailey Ranch Estates behind Lowe's in Owasso.
I read your thread about running out of gas on the highway. Wish I would have happened by you to help somehow.

Matt,
This is not a proven answer to your question about why more Superformance Cobras are for sale than any other brand, but I would speculate based on the ones I have seen and ridden in that since they have sold so many more than any other brand, some of the owners are moving up to Kirkhams and such. I think it is more of there are just more of them to be sold than any other brand than anything to do with the cars as they are great.

I put my Superformance up for sale for exactly the reasons stated here already - 1. I enjoy the building (or finishing) of the car more than anything and 2. Those aluminum cars in Utah look good. I have no complaints at all about the Superformance and I'll glady have fun with it if it doesn't sell. But, at the same time, if I could sell it, come up with $15K-20K, and a year's worth of elbow grease - it'd be neat to have an aluminum car. I'd probably put it up for sale when I finished it, too!

First, there are a lot more Factory Five Cobras than any other brand. I would guess that FFR has 3-4 times more than Superformance. In regard to why there would appear to be a disproportionate number of SP for sale? It may be due to the basic reason why people by SP vs FFR (or other kits). SP dealers sell completed rollers, or completed cars, while FFR sells only kits, which the purchaser must build themselves. SP purchasers may tend to be primarily people who just want to drive a Cobra. FFR purchasers want to build their dream car, and then enjoy the fruit of their labors. I think that makes a closer relationship to the car, thus you want to keep it rather than sell it. This is just my opinion, and not anything negative about SP or their owners. SP has a good quality product.

I would think that someone who built there car from the ground up would have more of an 'emotional' attachement and less likely to part with it. That combined with the numbers SPF puts out might explain the trend.
Of course recently you could throw in the Kirkham and CAV/Shelby factor in combined with the price point of the SPF.

Reasons for so many SPF cars for sale?
-Lots of them sold by dealers to guys who think they want a Cobra but......
-Cobra is not like a Vette - it is a RAW hot rod
-They build lots of them
-They are expensive and I think many of their owners can afford to buy one, drive it a few thousand miles and then sell them for something else
-Not long ago SPF was viewed along with ERA as THE top car to own (excluding the ultra expensive SAI Aluminum cars) - Kirkham $40K Aluminum cars have given many SPF owners an option to "upgrade"
-They sell through a dealer network that makes driving one without turning a wrench very easy - Easy in = Easy out
-Many of the resale cars have BB motors that may scare the hell out of their owners (unexperienced driver + 500HP = garage queen)
With so many NICE SPF cars for sale it will be interesting to see what kind of money they bring. IMHO most SPF cars are being listed at prices that do not reflect the current market and looks to me like most are not finding new homes.

Also most FFR owners dont sell their cars on Cobra Country. Go on the FFR forum PLENTY of FFRs are for sale 14 just in April alone. SPF owners tend to advertise the sale on Cobra Country. Ill bet there are more FFRs up for sale compared to SPFs.
Just an observation.
