AVON 15" tyres
A thread was running on gt40s.com a while ago about Avons. A gentleman on that forum made contact with the factory some time ago, marshalled support from the forum membership, and this led to Avon actually producing tires for the GT and Cobra crowd.
They are the CR6ZZ radial design tire. RKR is an Avon dealer but their site does not show the 235/245/295 sizes we require. Avon's site is not much better, last I looked.**) Does anyone have knowledge of or experience with these tires? They are discussed as being equal to G"Year Big Letters and hand-cut slicks for grip. Specifically, are they DOT approved for "over here"? Appreciate any input. |
This sounds interesting!
I'ld like to know about them as well. - Bill - |
Go to gt40s.com for more information. The tires are available in 245/60 and 295/50 sizes. For those people with ERAs, the 245 size might be too large, so check the current tire's clearance when the wheels are turned.
|
Thanks for the heads-up Bob. That's why I'd order the 235's. I believe they are already, or will be offered in 235.
Really interested if DOT stamped, like Hoosier TD's. |
Bob/others,
I run 245/60-15s in front on my 427 ERA Cobra now with no clearance issues. With the big block it seems to do a tad better for me and the car handles great. |
Here is the link to one of AVON tire "ordering" threads over there on GT40s.com. Member Malcom also posted some of the diameter and width sizes. The front and rear tires size/diameter is very close which is good news for those who want to try them.
Thread: http://www.gt40s.com/forum/showthrea...light=AVON+245 Sizes: Front: 245/60/15 V, 7 to 8.5, 26.65, 9.88, 8.66, Rear: 295/50/15, V rated, rim width 8.5 to 10.5 inches, 26.9 inch diametre, 12.2 inch section, 9.84 inch of tread. |
Duane,
I have TD 245/60's fronts now. Borrowed a friends BillBoard's of "same" size and they just rub the sway bar at full lock. Every mfgs. numbers seem to be different, especially the Brits. |
Expensive but finally a V rated road radial!
|
Please be aware that the "tyre" offered is the CR6ZZ, described as "Road legal 'E' marked, Moulded Radial competition tyres". It sounds to me like they are soft rubber, not unlike the Hoosiers.

The link reveals that RK has not updated the site with new size information.
"Soft rubber"-anything wrong with that? Bob you have an email. |
Nothing at all wrong with soft rubber unless tire life is an issue. I ran Hoosier TDs and as long as you are not racing on them, you can get pretty good life from them... say close to 10,000 miles.
|
"Soft Rubber" When I ordered my CSX, I was going to upgrade the tires to the Blue Streak Racing Tire. I was advised by the SPF dealer, that the rubber was too "soft" and would result in more stone chips. The same dealer highly recommended the Yokohamas, for performance. I decided to go with the stock Goodyears, to keep that "correct" look.

Chas....I have been talking to a rep that is working on getting the tires and has connection with UK. Looking at this thread, you have people that already have them, in the 245/60/R15 as well as the 295/50/R15. Those that 'do' have them, can they tell me how well they work, and are they as street legal as they say they are? Also, how difficult is it to get them? I am in touch with someone that 'really does know ' the tire, and will be hearing from them tomorrow.
thanks , I appreciate it, and any info I recieve, I will pass on as well> Really would like a 245/50 tire to compliment the 295's......for the Cobra.....but, hey, anything is better these days! fred z:cool: |
This is indeed interesting. I dispacthed an email to RKR to see whats up with Avon producing more. With hope, they will post the results here. I encourage all of you to contact Roger Kraus Racing at http://www.rogerkrausracing.com/contact.html to express your interest.

I recceved my tires last weekend 245/60-15V front and 295/50-15V for the rear. They are great tires. Perfect size for 289 FIA ! Only missing the big letters on the sidewall

Fritz........as I am in the process here in trying to help receive them here in the states, which is now.....happening........how do you like their performance? also, how are they on straights and road courses? and finally, how do you like the ride? All these help us know what to expect. I am, by the way, working on seeing if we can get them with the lettering.......look forward to your reply........they are supposed to be Dot legal here, from what I understand.
thank.s fred z:cool:  |
