Mounted the Avons on my SPF
5 Attachment(s)
Here's some photos of the new Avon 15" high performance DOT radials.
Very simple and clean. Period correct size and tread pattern. No comparison to the Yokohamas they replaced, these things are the real deal. Wait to go, Avon - thanks! :) |
cool
SP......been waiting to see those on your car.......I am the guy that was originally in contact with the Avon guy here in Calif........wanted to see how they look, but also how they perform
what are they like in performanc? go ahead, elaborate> thanks.......fred z:MECOOL: |
Hi Fred -
Yes, for sure, you got the fire lit under my A$$ to track down these tires! ;) :3DSMILE: Just put them on Friday, and I have only put about 100 miles on them, but they are great. I had been running Yokohamas for the past 30,000+ miles. I thought they were a pretty good street performance tire on my car. In comparison with the Avons, the Yokos feel absolutely greasy! Tremendous difference. I could never get Yokos to balance out but so good. I always had a slight shimmy somewhere in there. Most recent Yokos it was a mild shimmy around 70mph. That is absolutely gone with the Avons. Very smooth. The improvement in steering response is amazing - much more immediate and positive. Cornering is a whole new world. Very planted feel. I can defiintely still light the tires up, but it is different. They are really digging in and trying to grab while they are spinning rather than the "on ice" feel of the Yokos. These tires are a great performance upgrade. The car feels more responsive and better controled than it ever has. It's no question that at around $1200+ for a set, these are not cheap tires. The big question is how much do they REALLY cost - that is, what kind of mileage wear are they going to provide under spirited street driving. There's only one way to find out! :D |
Congrats.......I am just glad that after all the work we put in........they are worth it!! I am running BFG Radials now........just for breakin....but as I just hit 500 miles.........am going to switch over to the Avons.........the price...who cares.....if they do the job, it really doesn't matter.......the car needs shoes that work......nothing else matters.......you and I and all the owners should realize.....this is where the car meets the road.......why would you cheap out on that?????
\ stay in touch, and keep me updated, but , I will have them on my new FFR pretty soon. Merry Christmas/ fred z:MECOOL: |

do you know what speed rating these tires have? |
EL......they are rated at 'V' rating......which is 149 mph. just a couple below the W and Z ratings....
HTH fred z:MECOOL: |
FredZ / SPF1061,
What exact Yokohama tire model did you have on there before? older Y352 or Avid S/T, etc How old were your Yokohama's when you took them off? |
Would it be in poor form to stencil a crude 'Goodyear' on the sidewalls?
Wow - a radial fat boy. Too bad I just got a new set of Blue Streaks. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d.../IMG_03251.JPG |
I got my Avons from Roger Kraus.

Duane.....sorry if there is a misunderstanding....I did not run Yoko's, but SFP1061 did.........so you need to ask him.....I currently have BFG Radial's and though they look nice, and run OK......want to get the best 15' I can.....so that is my question to SPF.....and he seems to like them alot........
sorry if any mis communication.......... fred. |
Duane -
I ran Yokohama Avid S/T's before I put on the Avons. The Yokohamas will last practically forever (15,000+ miles). I bought my Superformance new in September 2001. I have put over 41,000 street, road course, auto cross and dragstrip miles on my car. I have run through 1 set of Goodyear Eagle IIs (quickly) and 2 sets of Yokos in that time. Hope that helps. |
Good comparison worth noting...
Fred / SPF1061,
Good to know. Thanks for the update. So far the Yoko Avid's have been the only radial game in town to me for the std 15" wheels. They actually suprised me way back for the price point when they first came out and when I first tried them in comparison to my former Yoko's and other BFGs. If the new Yoko Avid S/Ts feel "greasy" in comparison to these new Avon radials, that is worth takign note of for sure. That tread sure looks old school on those Avon's. Amazing someone finally did it after all of our moaning and complaining back and forth to each other here on CC. :D SPF1061, How "smooth" do the Avon's feel to you driving down the road at say 70mph or so, letting go of the steering wheel - does it shake at all? Is it as least as smooth or close to what the Yoko Avid's were when the car was new? |
