Painting question. How much have you guys spent?

I'm thinking of buying a Cobra. I would like a Kirkham. I was thinking that the brushed look is the way to go. It's a $5 Grand option but perhaps worth it (No real maintenance no chips). I have the ability and the shop to paint it myself but I wonder what it would run. I figure the paint and supplies could run $800-1g

RedEsprit 06-20-2007 06:33 PM

That's about right

ng8264723 06-20-2007 09:02 PM

I wonder how much work is needed to paint a Kirkham?

trularin 06-21-2007 06:18 AM

$8K for a show quality job.

:D

$8grand WOW!!!! I can definately paint myself. I'm not sure if it will be an $8 thousand dollar job though. If I had to spend that much I definately would just get the brushed alum look

If you get an A&C in gelcoat you just have to wax it now and then. Paint cost: $00

THe Kirkham doesn't have a gel coat

Yep a good paint job will cost you about $8 grand. Also, to do it right you will have to strip the car down, paint it, and build it back up.

Here are some pictures from my Kirkham paint process. More in my gallery.

I haven't spent one red cent.

Gordon Levy 06-22-2007 11:33 AM

Come on Jamo, scotchbrite pads cost some.
To paint an aluminum car generall runs in the $8K-$10K ball park. The Kirkhams do a great job with the bodies but there is still a lot of straightening that needs to be done for a high quality paint job. It just takes time and unfortunately that time isn't free.

Paint, for what?

BT SNAKE 06-22-2007 01:13 PM

Gordon is correct about the time factor. It is
labor intensive to say the least. I disagree with the material
costs. I get wholesale and it is not that cheap. I recently
purchased enough to do a complete paint job and it came to more
like $1200, That includes all the sandpaper discs, primer, filler, paint, thinner, hardener, and filters etc. Go buy a gallon of red premium auto paint. That will show you how rediculis costs are. Preperation is
the secret. The better the prep the better the job will be. There is a reason
the Kirkhams charge 5K for a satin finish ... it's all time and they
spend no money for paint. They buy plenty of those sanding discs and scotchpads though ...:JEKYLHYDE :D

Paint costs were around $1100 for PPG DBU red base coat, sealer, clear, thinners, and paint for stripes and numbers. Then add the cost for sand paper, filler, cleaners, wipes, paint suits, masking tape, masking paper, etc, etc.
