The Three A-Holes. Wasn't that a movie with Steve Martin, Chevy Chase & Martin Short?

It has been SO much fun to read this thread! Now, as a former Englishman (accent and all) who became an American citizen a decade or more ago, I am JUST finishing my Cobra build. I have taken so many PERSONAL liberties just because I could (shaved trunk, AC badges, radio (!), door poppers not flimsy little twisty handles, and it's GREEN etc...go see my pics) that I am sure some a$$hole purist will start to pick on me about 'authenticity'...
I have the PERFECT response...imagine THIS in a plummy English accent (although it's actually NOT an accent at all, just how English sounds when it's pronounced correctly :) ) "ah well you see, this is NOT a Cobra at all, it's an AC Ace that was the ORIGINAL car on which the Cobra was based, so your 'authentic' replica isn't all that authentic anyway" ... argue THAT one with someone with an English accent...rofl! Lighten up some of you guys, as someone said earlier, "it's just a car, and if chicks dig it, who cares". According to string theory, everything is all random chance anyhow! |
I have nothing personal against anybody posting in this thread, but...
it blows my mind that were even entertaining the possibilty that some replicas are 'equal to or better than' an original'? More horse power? More comfort? Better mpg, brakes, suspension, etc ad naseum, you've missed the point, the copy will never have the HISTORY and VALUE of the original no matter how hard you try. If modern technology is the yardstick we use to judge if our replicas are 'better' than an original, then we must allow all modern cars to compete. There are MANY modern cars 'equal to or better than' an original Cobra, depending on how you measure it! It's like saying someone did a better job of recreating a Van Gogh by using a modern canvas, better longer lasting paint, smoother brush strokes and brighter colors and then saying, 'it's better'! WTF? Heres a reality check, your replica and your modern continuation Shelby, nice though they be, cannot replace an original. It shall forever remain a 'wannabe'. Your car is inferior in every way that has any real meaning when it comes to history and value when compared to an original. I accept that FACT, and yet I like my car very much in spite of it! The fact that these modern replica Cobra drivers did not recognize 'reality' when it was right before their eyes speaks volumes about how this hobby has changed over the years. History and it's rightful place is to easily pushed aside these days in favor of 'modern technology' and 'better' stuff. While we may talk of 'round tube frames' being 'correct' get the LOG out of your eye! That round tube frame replica may well have 17" wheels, a small block EFI motor, red velour interior, walnut dash, wings and aero work hanging all over it and is SO FAR removed from the 'spirit' of the Cobra it's a virtual, well I won't say. It's handling may be superior, I don't care, you've missed the point. And yet, I fully support your choice and am happy for you, I will gladly check out your car, looks good, if it makes you happy, cool! Better than original? Not possible, never happen. |
