I need more power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am already getting use to this motor and the current power it puts down, the power plant is a 347 Stroker with edelbrock heads, now I am unsure where i want to be power wise I want to have enough power to own the road course but not to much to be dangerous on the twisties. I think a good # would be somewhere around 400RWHP the motor I have is advertised to be 450bhp so since I have never put it on the rollers I have no idea of what it truley putting down. What are the experts opinion.

Patrick,

Why not start with a few dyno pulls and see what your numbers are? Then you will have a good baseline on how much more you want.
I think you have a good number in mind, any where between 400 to 450 RWHP.

I'm no expert, but having driven my 347 for 2 years, I know what you're saying. Currently, I have 306RWHP. I figure that 400RWHP would get my attention, although my track times can still improve a lot with the motor as it is! You need to know what you have already.

Give a little thought to adding a turbo. A 15% to 40% increase in HP is very realistic using much of what you already have. Sure you will need to make some internal changes but you have quality stuff now and it is far from used up so build on top of it. If you keep boost in a realistic range reliability is not affected. Ask K Craft what he thinks as his opinion is good as gold.

wtm442 07-20-2007 09:12 AM

1) Different rear gears (higher numerically)
2) Nitrous
3) If the low cost options above do not make enough power - time to increase the cubic inches.

Manowar 07-20-2007 11:18 AM

Try this: World's first all aluminum Man O'War 9.5 deck 427.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...block/8268.jpg

575 HP @ 6400 RPM, 399 POUNDS , as you see it with 7 qts oil.
Enough power?
Enough lightness?
We can also build it as a 460 with over 600 HP if the answers are "no". :)

In order to have 400rwhp in a Cobra, you'd need about 550 engine horsepower. I have dynoed everything from stock 302s, to big inch stroker 351s, to nice big FEs in Cobras. I've had guys with engine dyno sheets in the 550 range, only make just over 400 to the wheels.

Ironically, the most powerfull Cobras I've had on my dyno, are the stroked Windsors. They make more power than even hot FE motors. Of course, the FE's crush them for torque.

In comparison, my 400-425hp 390 puts down a whopping 305rwhp in my CSX :). Funny thing is, my car is far from slow :3DSMILE: .

I'm wodering what my stroker will do? Wht would one expect from the following:

http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...a/IMG_1131.jpg

Seasoned 72 block bored .40
Eagle internally balanced crank with chevy journals
Oliver "Parabolic Beam" rods
JE forged pistons
Comp Cams 35-781-9
Crane SS rockers
Main girdle
Rocker girdle
Moroso external oil pump
Moroso pan
ATI damper
Super victor
Demon 825
AFR 205 heads
solid roller lifters
MSD Dist and Digital 6 ignition
CR 12.5

Poolw 07-20-2007 01:55 PM

I would expect you will need racing gas with 12:5 CR. Call Keith Craft and tell him what you what and he'll build it.

FST FOX 07-20-2007 02:15 PM

I plan on seeking advise from KCM, but will most likely strap it on the rollers and get a base line then change heads, cam and then have Rob do his magic and see where that gets me.

FST FOX 07-20-2007 02:19 PM

The engine package I got was advertised as a 450BHP motor so what i guess I need to accomplish is getting another 100BHP to be in my desired range, and to the other suggestions about gears and Nitrous, no to gears I like the current set-up and no to Nitrous never liked it and only used it once on a rental car when I was at Ennis

pmfranke 07-20-2007 02:27 PM

You will allways get used to what you have no matter how much it is. How scared do you want to be? All you need is a little No2 to put you over the top. MY 2 CENTS.

neverwouldof 07-20-2007 02:54 PM

Yes... powersurge is absolutely correct on power loss to wheels from crank. The engine i have was sold as having 600 at crank with high octane gas and no sidepipes. But when on the car and i've finely gotten close to tuned in... its about 440hp at wheels on 93 octane. Which is close to 25% loss. But to be honest.... if i had regular high performance goodrich street tires on there i wouldn't be able to control when dropping hammer. The race tires help keep me attached to earth. So if you can get 375-400hp to wheels , thats plenty to scare yourself and say thank you Jesus! (or whatever God you prefer!)

FST;

Your 347 combo is pretty "healthy" at 450hp, to get another 100 hp out of it, your going to need some serouis stuff, ie.,more cam, more compression, cylinder head work, probably more/better carb, and possibly a stronger bottom end to handle 550 hp........

Getting in the 450 hp range is not that hard to do with the right combo of parts, but as you try to move up the hp scale, you will have to spend a lot of money for small gains, assuming you stay with a carbed motor and no power adders........

I think the easiest, cheapest, and quickest way to go would be to add a super charger, many, many on the market to choose from.....

For reference, my 354 stroker (3.47 stroke instead of 3.40 for 347) last dyno'd 388 at the wheels through the exhaust and right at 400rwhp with open headers. I have TW heads and a custom cam (246*, 252* at 0.050) with ~9.8:1 compression. It runs through a Tremec 3550 and Jag IRS with 4.09 rear gear, so figure you can figure that into whatever number you want to use for driveline loss.

Current setup runs 11.75 at 116 in 1/4. Here's vid of the dyno and 1/4 mile run:

what is your rear wheel torque? Sorry, I should have watched the video first. Please tell me more about your cam and heads specs.

neverwouldof 07-20-2007 08:22 PM

it says 357 torque and 388 hp

Robert;

Where did you find a chasis dyno???? I tried but can't get my car on those portable units, need in in-ground unit....

My race motor is out of the car right now getting "freshened-up" and should be back in and running in about 2 or 3 weeks....after I dyno the motor, I would like to put the car on a chasis dyno to compare the #s........

Thunder Racing in Baton Rouge. Been using them on my cars for about 10 years now.

Gerherdt's also has one, don't know if it's in ground, though, never been there. Stang-Hi Racing has one too. They're fairly new and their dyno is above ground. All in B.R.
