-10 AN or -12 AN for oil cooler?
Howdy, me again.... I started a post about my supercharged Taurus SHO here.
I am currently trying to setup my oil cooler setup and I am having a really hard time deciding between -10 or -12 AN. Can anyone offer some advice in that area? I also found out today that my Fluidyne Therm-HX cooler is a tad large for fitment, so I need to sell that off and order a different cooler. I am looking at Earl's Temp-A-Cure coolers and Mocal coolers. Anyone have any experience with the two. Both seem very similar in build and design. My oil can get rather warm, so I'm looking for something that is relatively large and doesn't cause a huge pressure drop. THANKS! |
Jason, I think you will be fine with -10 on the SHO. Many Cobra guys run -10 on their cars. Of course, -12 will flow more oil, but I doubt you'll have that kind of flow need over the -10.

Go -10 with the lines. Look at good smooth bore XRP lines Nomex covering. Mocal and Earl both make good coolers and have run both.

So it seems like the consensus is -10 AN. You guys don't think I'll see improvement or added safety with -12 AN? I spin the motor about 1,000 RPM faster than factory and IIRC, the pump is a high flow unit. The biggest part is that I am limited on space. If I have to go with -10 AN for space requirements, I want to make sure I'll be good for even track use.

What I'll do today is order a -10AN and -12AN 90 degree fittings and see what will fit. I may just not be able to fit -12AN.

Jason, -12 is quite larger than -10 in relation to fitting and line size. With what you are trying to do under the hood of your SHO, I would definitely use the -10.

I'll mount it in front of the condenser and the car is anywhere between 550 -600hp. I'm trying to keep it clean without having fitment problems with the lines, but I'd rather over-cool since I have a t-stat. |

Hmmm... I don't have fender space.... There's a water injection pump on one side and a HUGE intake on the other. I also have brake cooling ducts taking up some room. I like the idea, so I'm going to look in the garage to see what room I do have.

I just took a look, I don't have any room at all. The pump takes up too much space on the drivers side and the CAI barely fits on the passenger side.
Here's what I'm working with for some of the fittings. The plug on the block is the same plug Pat is using on the race car, however, he is limited to -8AN. I bought an NPT plug that uses and Allen Wrench to tighten down so it sits flush. The 90 degree corners are not good, actually restrict oil pressure. I run XRP HS-79 lines that have a extremely low pressure drop that have a larger inner bore than most lines that are -10 with all fittings that have a smooth bends. Morgan, I plan to use swivel fittings that have smooth mandrel transitions. I'll look into that hose you suggested.

Morgan, you know my car is built to orginal specs, hence the exact correct oil cooler fittings on my car. Naturally if I were building a car for performance, I'd use a radius tube end 90*.

Don't forget to run an oil theromstat and yes it's a must have item in any oil cooling system!

Nevermind on the cooler... I found a way to make this large sucker fit. I'm glad as I already have it and it's supposed to be a good unit. I'll post pics when everything is done.
I bought the Mocal SP1T and I'm waiting on the SP1T-HF version to show up too. I think the HF version will make an easier fit with the ports spread out wider. We'll see next week. |
