I also was wondering about the harmonic balancer on the SOHC engine. Seems to me the side oilers came with a single pulley and NO harmonic balancer, being as they were internally balanced. Perhaps SOME side oilers DID come with an external harmonic balancer? Was this a common application on the SOHC engine, which is of course a slightly modified side oiler block and crank.
428 crank in a side oiler is easy to spot, ALL 428 cranks had a harmonic balancer, being externally balanced engines. Does a boat application require a special kind of balancer (reference the 289 and possibly the SOHC engines in the auction)? |

Actually the harmonic balancer and balance are 2 different things. The harmonic balancer became fairly standard on all FE engines by ,I believe..1966, they were the same regardless of engines. The 428(all except SCJ) used a weighted Flywheel and the SCJ version also used a weighted "hatchet" behind the balancer. Although on small blocks, all external balanced, the damper also acts as a weighted piece... on FE's they have no weight and are just to absorb vibrations. I believe the change was made for 2 reasons, one is rpm's increased for HP engines at that point and more options became available and instead of a bunch of dampers with different pulleys they made the pulley and damper as 2 pieces. Unlike early FE's that had a single pulley made into the damper. |

Is it just my imagination or is that the same motor (link in post above) by the same auctioneer in the first row of pics (center) with boat headers on it?....the same motor that has never been in a boat...what do i know.
