Cammer auction on Ebay
For all you engine gurus out there what is this thing really worth?...and what will it bring at auction?

I'm not sure what they will bring currently or how much the Keith Black name adds( I think Ed Pink was the SOHC hot dog at the time), but I have seen them going for $20-22,000 in the last couple years. Maybe it was Earl Wade that was the SOHC guru.

The description says it dyno'd by Keith Black in 1966 at 675 hp...pretty amazing.

:LOL: :LOL: That's a boat engine. Note the reference to "correct rotation"? That's a boat oil pan and boat headers. UNLESS, it was installed in some GT40. Anyone know, here at the site most likely to know, of a SOHC installed in a GT40? Anyone? You'd be paying for originality. Anything more than $25K or so. Heard about the coming SOHC package, all new parts, all aluminum, including aluminum block and heads, $11,500? Coming soon. But it's selling at a live auction; a bunch of bulls crowded together in a pasture, each planning on showing just how meaty their Rocky Mountain oysters are. So I predict $40,000+. |
Now that you mention the boat scenario that may well explain the bell housing.

Note the stain on the oil pan from the bildge water about half way up the front of the pan. Not to mention the marine oil pan itself.**)

The engine behind the SOHC is a 289 apparently. The 289 still has its marine timing cover with the cast-in boat mounts.

The auctioneer seems to have a not very good feedback rating for the few auctions they've done. Anyone know anything, real facts, about this "collection"? |
I sent the auction house a note to ask if the cammer came out of a boat or if it was ever in a boat...we'll see.

Still nothing on the boat question...is there a resource online (or offline for that matter) somewhere that breaks down how a Cammer works, etc.??

Even if it was in a boat, and that certainly appears to be the case, it doesn't mean this is a 'bad' engine. It IS, however, a misleading ad at best. Makes it sound like 'zero hours' on the motor, and if installed in a boat, you can bet it has some HARD hours on it!
Regardless of the above, if I were buying the engine I wouldn't run it 'as is'. It would be taken down to the bare block and totally inspected/rebuilt. The question would be: How many hours does the block have on it? With the thin wall construction of a side oiler block will it need to be sleeved? How much machine shop work are we talking about here? You'll never know till you buy it! :D |
Here is the response from the auction house on the "boat and rotation" question.
"NO- It is correct rotation. There are boat headers laying in the back ground. It was not raced or put in unit. I do think that this was the previous owners intent though. It was purchased with the boat headers on it- but we took them off and our seller knew the man that owned the motor in CA and went to his estate sale and bought it when he died cause he wouldn't sell the motor. It was just in his garage". |

The cammer certainly looks like it has a little more than dyno time on it from the pics....... I looked at the pics of the 289 K-code motor, while the pics are not the best, from what I can see, that is NOT a K-code harmonic balancer on the front of the motor, makes one wonder about the rest of the motor.....maybe they were "told" it was a K-code motor?????:CRY: :CRY: :rolleyes: :rolleyes: David |
