Amsoil synthetic oil
I had a brief chat with our local Amsoil rep at a recent car show. I read on a previous post about motor oils, that the Amsoil products were pretty highly rated. Following 2K or so break in miles, I'm considering using their 20/50 racing oil. Anyone have any "cons" for that strategy? It runs $10 / qt, but they swear you can get 12K - 15K miles between changes. I'm not sure I would want to push it that far, but half that would help equalize the cost. Though extended engine life renders the expense trivial.

Mobil1 0W40 works the best for me for less money. I think that Mobil1 15W50 is about $5.00 a Qt.

I use 20/50 Redline and I just changed it at 6K mileage (2 years of driving). Other than being black, the oil was in excellent shape. No grit, no sludge.
If cost of synthetic oil is a problem for you, why do you have a Cobra????? Trade it in on a nice Prius. :LOL: :LOL: :LOL: :LOL: or a 74 Vega :JEKYLHYDE |
Check out Schaeffer Supreme 7000 Synthetic Blend racing oil. This oil is manufactured with a moly ingredient that really appears to reduce friction. A friend who raced using both Mobil 1 then Red Line tested it with three ricer motors running 6000 rpm for 30 minutes. The Schaeffer had temps 12-15 degrees lower and that engine ran with consistently higher oil pressure.. RD

Are you really going to wait 12-15k miles before you change your oil?

Oh I believe that the oil can last that long, just not the owners:) I would still change it every year regardless of how many miles I would drive. Especially if I lived in a area with cold winters.

if it is racing oil then it has few if any detergents, it would then be critical to change the oil often. racing oils are made to be changed after every race or at least very often. Be careful. I would suggest Red Line (non race formula) Royal Purple, mobil 1 or Valvolene synthetic and add a bottle of STP red or two for more Zn

ENTDOC, it was this white paper you posted on a previous thread that put me on to Amsoil to begin with. I suppose I need to read it a few more times in order for the data to sink in.

I always feel better using Mobil1 or Red Line, Amsoil reminds me of Amway for some reason. How come it's not in stores?

nothing wrong with Amsoil, just be sure it has the correct detergents. Many companies make street oil and race oil, generaly stick with street oil for our cars. another interesting thing I read recently was about the importance of additives(ie. ZN, moly ect..) even in our modern roller motors. It seems the bearing pressure is so high at high RPM's that most of the oil is squeezed out of the top bearing and the only protection it might have is the zinc type additives, so I go with an oil with Zn even though all my cars have roller cams.

I have used Amsoil in my 390 FE, my daily driver, my truck, my motorcycle (Built Buell), numerous racing motorcycles (all air-cooled) and in everything I drove when I lived in Anchorage. I always changed it every year, or more frequently if I drove the vehicle a lot. I swear by it.
I have used other synthetics and the closest to Amsoil was Torco. Redline isn't bad either. I also used zero wt. Royal Purple in one of my race bikes, worked incredibly well and increased HP. Couldn't seat the rings with it but it worked great after seating with dino oil. Dumped it after each race and didn't blink an eye at the cost. I have usually changed the Amsoil in my daily driver after 12,000 miles but change the filters (Amsoil also) every 6k. No problems...... and it starts well in our cold winters and hot summers. Don't know where you get the $10/qt price. I sign up for the Preferred Customer deal ($20/year) and get it for dealer price. It costs $7+/qt retail but I pay around $5.75/qt. And, yes it's available in stores or you can go to their website and find a distributor near you. Not hard. All good things take a little effort to procure. Amsoil has been worth it for me. Paul |
we are looking at the Amsiol or Royal Purple also after break in ,used the Purple in our KTM and loved the power gain cool stuff ,so are Amway products Bob !

I have to ask---if Royal Purple and Amsoil are so good, why are they not more popular with the mainstream oils like Quaker, etc.
You know what they say, if you build a better mouse trap.....if it is indeed a better moustrap why are car companies not converting over and using it as their first fill. I am sure it would help warranty/wear issues and allow them to beef up their HP ratings for sales. |
synthetics dont cook like dino oils
i know in our case we could not break in the engine on full synthetic the rings wont seat and it will have blowby like crazy:( i really dont have a clue exept that its tough to get a engine broke in ,we are running straight 30w for break in we only have maybe 4 or 5 hours on our engine so it could be a while till we put in the good stuff ,like i siad we raced on this stuff for years and it works saved our engine from blowing from overheating:eek: our builder said we would have Cooked dino oil and lost it. when we took the short block apart it looked brand new inside replaced the head won on it the next several weekends:cool:

I have a friend who uses the amsoil in his cars. He also signed up for the dealer discount thing and he orders cases of oil and filters at a time. he also buys the spray lubricant like WD-40, it works good too. I have seen the oil from one of his cars, it had 12,XXX miles on the oil with a filter change in the middle and the oil looked like it still had plenty of life. In fact, in his acura it had the meter to say when your oil is dirty. it was just barely over 1/2used according to the meter. It could be inaccurate, but I think 12-15k miles is not really unheard of. Everyone I've ever seen that uses amsoil swears by it! Can't be that bad....

As far ad break-in goes. How is it that some new car companies use synthetic oil as their first fill from the factory.
I think everyone agrees that synthetic is better than conventional but are certain synthetics that are better than the rest? I am sure there are some differences but enought to make a difference? |
