Polished or Satin? You be the judge...
Okay, opinions are like ********...everyone has one. :LOL: So fire away and tell what you think about this transformation. I decided to exchange Mother's Billet Polish for Scotchbrite pads and lacquer thinner. A few more pics are in my gallery. Again, would like to hear all yays and nays. This car is constantly in evolution...keeps it fun!

Mine leaked ever so slightly and I had to remove the tank shortly after these pics were taken (I see a few fingerprints here and there...God I'm anal). We shall see how long I can keep a seal on this thing. And, NO, my stainless tank is NOT for sale. :) Thanks, -Dean |
The brushed looks nice. The polished did as well but that stuff always ends up scratched anyways so why not go with it. Scotchbright pads and WD-40 is all we used for years on aluminum components and structures.

I think we had this discussion in the Hillbank parking lot - I prefer the brushed and have serious envy over your valve covers. Any problem with them leaking? I've been wanting some of those, but have been scared away by stories of continual leaks. If I wanted a leaky engine, I would have gotten a big block!:LOL: Doug |

Doug, these covers are probably manufactured in China somewhere, but they do have a billet base (that's the key!). Around $100 plus shipping on FleaBay. They seal up nice. I use a thick composition cork Felpro gasket (two pieces of cork with steel insert), seal them to the cover with Black Ultra RTV, and then tighten them down so that the cork compresses slightly over the lip of the cylinder heads. No leaks. Pay about $30 for those gaskets, but that and the flat billet rail make the difference. BDR561, I tried to do it myself and it was a PITA to get all the machine marks to go in the same direction. So I farmed out the work to a local metals finishing shop for a total cost of $115. Maintenance (so far...keeping fingers crossed) is a rough Scotchbrite pad and a clean cotton rag dipped in lacquer thinner (be careful around painted surfaces!). Occasional scratches can be worked out with a little 180 grit sandpaper followed by the pad and lacquer thinner (don't ask how I know this). -Dean |

I like the brushed look ..... and as they say you are never done!!!
I started to polished the aluminum engine compartment panels in my Cobra and after the first "Mirror" panel I did not like it and went with the Scotchbright brushed look. I still have chrome valve covers and air cleaner, stainless tank, etc. I think some of the stuff will be changed out to brushed. |

Yeah, I like the brushed look better, too. On a street rod, polished would be more appropriate but on a "racecar", I like the brushed finish. Actually, I like the brushed satin finish or a light bead blast finish on just about everything: car parts, knife blades, guns, tools, etc. It's much easier to maintain. Lookin' good! Lowell |

I mute my hubby after 9 pm. If we don't talk after 9 then we avoid a lot of late night picking and grumbling and whining and nagging. good plan! the brushed looks very nice. :) K |
I also have alot of chrome going on in the engine bay, but the brushed looks really great. Have had polished aluminum many times on the engine in the past, and emptied many tubes of Simichrome...now Wenol. This time bought one with all natural finishes and like it lot better. Love the surge tank. Will try the Scotchbrite with Lacquer thinner. Wondered how that brushed look "happened". Always thought it was wet or dry!!

Brushed looks better to me when you see the before and after next to each other, what are you doing this weekend maybe you could give my car that look;) I have plenty of beer.

Is it that shiney new? I have brushed aluminum and I would love it to look that nice. Someone said WD40 and a scotch brite pad?
