Hi Steve

Sounds like you had a pretty good weekend! I hope you can make it back again as three days is just never enough.
When the weather is perfect - a bit dull this year - there is nothing that compares to the Revival. Send word if and when you return and I'll even allow you to buy me a drink!
Cheers
Trevor

Hi Steve, excellent photos. You say you visited the first Revival at Goodwood in 98, yes i remember it too, but it rained all sunday morning, but fortunately for the T.T. the sun come out. I remember Phil Hill spinning Rob Waltons Cobra Daytona and gently clouting the banking.
This year i thought was one of the best, it was extra special as a kind spectator gave my son and i free paddock passes., and i got to meet Sir John Whitmore.
BTW Steve, the red Cobra of which you asked for the chassis number is HEM6. This car was actually assembled away from the AC factory by Tommy Atkins in his own workshop. Don,t know much more about the origins of the car except Roy Salvadori raced it at Goodwood in 1964.

[quote=PDHse]My son and i had a marvellous time again at Goodwood, great atmosphere, friendly people and fantastic cars. Larry Miller sent over CSX2299 and the Willment Cobra Coupe. Racing them was Bill Murray and Sir John Whitmore in CSX2299 and Desire Wilson and Lyn St James in the Willment.
The Tourist Trophy was very exciting , we watched the race from Fordwater. Just watching Cobras , Ferraris ,Corvette Stingrays and Jaguars sliding round Madgwick corner was awesome.
Sadly the race ended after forty five minutes as Martin Stretton had a heavy shunt in a Iso Bizzarini, i hear he got away with a broken elbow and bruises.
I,ll post a few pictures now and some tomorrow.

YES MARTIN STRETTON HIT THE TYRE WALL VERY HARD

That should be COB6042http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ld/COB6042.jpg

Beaten to it - it so happens I was finally got around to watching the TV prog this lunch time! He went into a corner a bit too hot with another car up his tail, slid wide, sideswiped an Aston and careered head on into the tyre wall. First time for this car at Goodwood. Pity.

Robs did several years of club racing with it but it only comes out to play occassionally. Nice to see a proper road-going Cobra mixing it with all the 'specials' with their streamlined Le Mans hardtops and trick parts. No doubt he got lapped several times, but who cares - nice weekend for a drive!

I only went on the Friday (shame on me) and I saw the Bizzarini get a smack up the rear from a Corvette - the rear panel was stoved in but the Vette was hardly marked! Will sort through my photos...

I was also introduced to Lyn St James and had a brief conversation with her (she was also down to drive a Vauxhall - don't ask...) Nice lady - any woman who races a Daytona is fine with me!!

Trevor,

How many Cobra`s did David Purley own,do you know ?

The first time I saw Cob6042 was at Brands Hatch earlier this year,I got speaking to Rob,who did not have much luck with the car that weekend.

He said that he had not raced it for 15 years

One - 6009. Cut it up and threw it in a skip. Nuff said.

What'saCobra? 11-07-2007 02:55 PM

Skip?

Gag!

Please, old boy. Too short a post. Really happened? OMG why?

Sorry to see Martin Stretton have such a lousy day. He is an excellent steering person and multiple champion in many many different series, so this is an irregular cock-up, fer' sure. Tho' i might not miss the Bizzar.

Next year i am buying, write it in a book. Best regards.

(Ps: Take a careful look at the Kirkham Daytona pix located elsewhere here. VERY special...)

Where/how would someone go about repairing a car like that? I feel really bad for the owner. That car was Sweet!

We are lucky to have several experienced repair shops in the UK where ali can be formed and repaired. One I know of has all the necessary panels hanging from the roof, ready to slap into place - the car's probably as good as new by now!

If originality is all-important, (as if!) I've seen Cobras repaired having suffered even worse damage purely by pulling the original metal back into shape - the joy of aluminum, it has a 'memory'. In one case, a rear wing had been flattened to an inch-wide block. A genuine artisan simply pulled and re-shaped the same metal back into its original form - amazing.

For those of us on the West side of the Atlantic (pond), wing is fender. ;)

Trevor Legate 11-08-2007 02:52 PM

Ref 6042/Purley - no idea. Certainly not listed in the 97 Registry. Mind you it does not list David owning any Cobra! I'm sure the next one will rectify this. If 6042 was the car that his cousin Derek Ridler drove, I was under the impression that Derek owned that one. Ooops just checked the chassis list and 6009 was the J. Anstiss car owned by him from new, now with Justin Law. I'll have to dig into my files to recall which car David smashed. When I get time....

Ah yes, apologies - fender it is. Silly me :-)

Yes Justin Law owns COB6009, I got speaking to him earlier in the year at the Historic Festival at Silverstone, I was curious weather David Purley had owned or raced COB6042. I have seen black & white photo`s of his Cobra with a silver hardtop. I do remember one of the commentators mentioning that COB6042 was once owned by David Purley

COB6009
