				 Steve McQueen shifting in Bullit
I just caught a showing of "Bullit" on cable and of course was glued to the set for the ten minute car chase. This time, however, I noticed that Steve McQueen seemed to burp his engine with each upshift. Anyone else see this? What's it all about? |

Not usually necessary for upshifts, just cinematic licence I think. Did you also notice that he was driving the rare 18-speed toploader version of the Mustang?

You were listening to a sound track that was developed to make it sound cool, reality of the sound is an after thought. |

Look at the credits for sound editing at the end of the movie, blame the shifting on that guy.Movies are make believe, watch Bullet closely, the Charger misses everything in the gas station, and then the pumps blo up. |

Yes, I did notice the Mustang seemed to have A LOT of gears and also that the automatic Charger seemed to sometimes convert to a manual on the soundtrack. Still, even with Hollywood screwing with reality it's surely the best auto chase on film. |

It was a great chase scene, but many mistakes. Notice the charger threw off 6 or 7 wheel covers and that street in San Francisco seems to go on forever. The reason was that San Francisco only allowed them to close the street for one shot at it and they had 7 cameras all at different spots filming it. The Green Volkswagen that is in the hill shot was not supposed to be in it as he drove through the street block and they wouldn't let them shoot it over to get him out. Also the Mustang wasn't the primary car as they had brought a Fairlane to use but the engineers told them the Fairlane would break into if they drove it over those intersections like that. And just before the Charger goes into the 3 wall gas station, if you look close you can see the hitch on the right front of the Mustangs bumper that was holding it until the stunt driver pulled the release. Same thing there. The plywood phony gas station was out toward the airport and they only got one shot at it so they had to blow the car up even though it missed the pumps. But it is still in MHO the first of the great car chase scenes.

Just ignore the glitches and thank God that there was once a time when film makers had to use real cars instead of CGI to do chase scenes.

Non-syncro racing transmissions used to require rev matching on the up-shifts. (40's & 50's) It sounds like they were trying to mimic that sound.

Even though there is a ton of shifting it's still a cool chase scene, and, Ford beat Mopar again. |

Here it is, with all the glitches, THE BEST car chase scene of all time! IMHO! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z-sj3SzZkM

 interesting info...

You guys noticed how the Charger actually takes out a camera? oopsDefinitely one of the best scenes and great soundtrack by Lalo Schiffrin.

For those who haven't seen the movie, the chase involves two Secret Service agents being chased by FBI agents. Neither knows who the other is.

If you think that was acutally Steve shifting the car and not a"folley" (sp) operater your in the wrong zone. The car sounds do not match. |
