Magnesium wheels

While I might be in the minority, personally, I would prefer the appearance of the natural finish of a magnesium wheel to the powdercoated finish of an aluminum wheel. Also, the reduction of weight is always a nice benefit.

Given the question and potential costs:
i would admit that an original-style set of modern forged alloy rims would also be very attractive. Perhaps Fuchs as a supplier? Similarly priced i suppose, but very very tough indeed.

So are the majority of people asking here, looking to reduce weight for racing? I got the impression it was a "correctness" kind of thing.
As for look, that's a mute point. You can make an alloy rim look like a mag one. |

Does anyone replicate the "Sunburst" design that came on the street cars?
I saw a set on a orig 427 at the Boulder museum. Very sexy. Seemed to be a similar offset as the halibrands and really filled the wheelwells.

The reproed Kidneys are not complete to my knowledge, but the molds are being made from original wheels. For me, I don't really care if they are mag or not.
If PS had their one piece Kidneys available in more that 6.5" I would buy them in a second. However, I can only get the right sizes in the 2 piece variety from them. I am just not comfortable running the 2 piece welded Kidney Bean wheels after extensive discussions with many vintage racers. Further, the 2 piece Kidneys look different than the original wheels - they look like two separate pieces (rim and center).
On another note - I have FIA/Comp 427 Competion Girling style brakes; original Kidneys do not clear them. The backsides are being machined to clear the big girling brakes since most vintage racers are using the Comp brakes.

Seems like their would be a high number of different back space requirements for different replicas.Also people who don't want (cant use)knock off's.

There probably are lots of potential fitment variables out there. I am only looking into having wheels reproduced that are the same size and dimensions that the original wheels were and only in knock-offs. Otherwise, there are so many variables that the project would never get done. I am looking to replicate the original wheels, with the possible exception of subtle (hopefully undetectable from the outside) changes that are required in order to run new tubeless tires. I do not want to go into the wheel business. I just want a set of good wheels for my Kirkham. |
