Top end speed

What's the fastest anyone has ever had their Cobra top end? Feel free to post quarter mile stuff too, but I'm mainly interested in top end.
Thanks,
Joe

Greetings from England - l managed 175 mph measured using a GPS system for accuracy.

The gentleman that owns the USRRC Cobra that I work on has a great story about Watkins Glen back in 1979 (pre bus-stop). At the end of the straight going into 8 he was hitting over 175. He said the nose was so high up in the air it felt that the steering wheel had come detached from the wheels and he could hardly see over the nose. He had to be very careful getting onto the brakes to make sure the nose was settled before really getting on the binders. Definately a white knuckle ride :O)

Smokingcobra2 01-18-2008 04:56 PM

Around 125-128 till i get scared-could not see from the tears in my eyes from the wind and i felt the car lifting

170 going into Turn 1 at Fontana

some years ago, the Late Bob Olthoff told me that the top end of the SPF cars he was producing then, with usually the 351-392 Windsor motors, with about 425-475 hp would go about 155 top end. This was with the then standard five speed overdrive Tremec running the customary 3.77 diff spinning 15 inch wheels.

With this gearing and a 392 motor, i have done 149 at the standing mile, still accelerating at the traps. With my present engine and gearing, i suspect i would go just under 160, max.

Unless one takes off the windscreen, and has a really big motor, i personally doubt the claims for speeds much over 160 mph.

all the best...

140mph against an audi R8 wife was with me so thats as fast as I could go with out her freaking out. I did have more to give front end was getting light but not to bad would need to build that dome screen on the front grill and put some tape on it for down force. Audi was filming at RedRock in Vegas last year so there were about 6 of them some v8 some v12. He didn't race me we cruised at 80mph for awhile swaping back and forth then I wanted to see if he would follow but since the film crew was there you could tell he wanted but couldn't. Their top out at 173 I think so he would run me down at the end and be far more stable.

150 plus or minus 5 is about it, and then you better have a front spoiler. Hal, what RPM's were you turning? I reved out before I quit pulling. Did I mention my engine let go too? 427's that are just semi presious built don't like 7000 RPM's at ly yeast not for very long. :)

Around 130 with a close ratio toploader and a 3.70 rear end. That's all she'll do with that gearing, but I get there really fast!

jdog 01-18-2008 09:57 PM

Fastest I've been was?...............

140 in the Cobra, in 5th gear with plenty of motor left, I lost heart first!

I once did 180 in my Porsche 911 Turbo, on hwy 395, somewhere North of Reno!;)

What'saCobra? 01-18-2008 11:06 PM

1964 - 289 140mph @ 7000rpm, 3.77 rear gears, easy with Webers or even only the 715cp Holley, nose highish, like a contemporary mid-60's 'vette at 125mph. Weber much quicker. Street cars saw 7000 rpm every day a few times for over 10 years and stayed glued together. Didn't use over 6500 in first much, too easy to over-rev. Never lost a motor. Mobile 1 since invented. Early days with Pennzoil racing oil, except Dec to March 15, used regular Pennzoil. Quicker with top up. Kind of noisey and VERY taut.

1967 - 427 165mph @ 6800rpm, 3.06 "airport" gears, slow at top end with 950cfm 3bbl Holley, nose highish, sort of stable, drifting L & R. Would only rev over 6200 in high, if necessary. Never lost an engine. Mobile 1 since invented.

Fast at the time, pretty modest today. Still exciting in the car, though.

Rwillia4 01-19-2008 12:01 AM

140's within the first mile still in forth with plenty of power left and gears to go thru but not enough road!

WildBill3 01-19-2008 04:50 AM

**)121 mph@12.04**) top of 3rd gear in the 1/4, two gears left 3.08 final drive.82 fifth gear top speed HHmmm.:eek:gota 2.73 waiting in the wings for a real top speed run on the Salt:D

mtpockets 01-19-2008 05:10 AM

At the end of the two longs straights at MSR Angleton, 110 and just shifted into 4th. Down another long straight, I won't mention, 140 5th gear on the tail of a Carrerra S still pulling. Pucker factor 9.9. This was in the 1st car. BDR - 306 KC motor, 305 RWHP, tremec 3550. New BDR being put together now, KC 408, webers, 17" Goodyear F1's.

72 mph..........but that was a school zone with kids present......no kids or animals were injured during that attempt....(missed):LOL:

Actually 135 mph at Fernley Raceway in Reno, spf 0995 did it when I was a passenger, the driving instuctor did it.

jtart2 01-19-2008 08:58 AM

It would be great to mention the motor you're using as well. Thanks.

Top End

Several times in my younger days, (young and dumb), I took my Cobra to 165 MPH, or there abouts. At that speed the speedometer and tach are bouncing all over the place.

Could have been only 160, those original gauges bounced like Mexican Jumping Beans at those speeds. Once I had my first daughter, I realized that I was being selfish/dumb to go that fast.

Something about being a father made me slow down, now granted I only slowed down to somewhere between 130 and 140. But reality HAD sunk in !

It's amazing how quick the little bastards can be at times.
