My floormats almost killed me!

Ok so it's all good now, but here is the story.

Pre-rush hour, busy but fast highway. I'm in 5th and need to pass. I floor the car to get into a gap where I need to go. Car revs loud, we are pushed into the seats as we accelerate. I made it, and take foot off the pedal. EEK the car is still floored!!! ok semi getting closer FAST. Clutch in, rev limiter hit, foot under pedal to lift it, back off the clutch and a little brakes and all is well save for the girlfriend threatening certain parts of my anatomy.

Ok, turns out it was the floormat that bunched up to the front, trapping the pedal when I had floored it. The GF found me this link Product: Mat-LocĀ® Clips I think I am going to order them!

Yeah................

Great excuse, I'll have to try that one myself;)

Sounds like she's gonna take that one away from you!

Nice gadget. Thanks for the link. My mats move around as well....mostly toward the front getting in and out.

Xanthus 02-11-2008 10:44 PM

No it really was stuck, I was juiced with adrenaline for the next two hours. I am HAPPY I had that rev limiter in there or I'd have done some damage at full throttle with thr clutch down.

Looking back it's fun though.

She has her own new car so I'm safe. ;)

I have a five point harness on both seats. The floor harness is mounted thru the floormount......no can move G.I...........

No expense since I have to mount them anyway.....

GlynMeek 02-11-2008 10:50 PM

Here's what I did...

1) Bought industrial strength glue velcro, 1.5" wide
2) Cut 4" lengths and stuck the 'hook' side to the carpet
3) Cut 4" lengths and stuck the 'loop' side to the underside of the floor mats
4) secured the 'loop' side by sewing it to the floor mat at the corners, and in the middle with thread
5) Press the two together when you insert the floormat

works fine, and my floor mats don't move!

Glyn,

I did the same thing and in all of the years I had the car I never had a problem. Just made sure that I sewed the part to the carpet so it didn't pull loose and mess up the carpet.

I used the velcro trick on my front mat. Also reinstalled some screws wich had come loose.

I found that the heat would loosen the glue on hot and or long drives. I used a bunch of velcro.

Those clips look like a good idea, but I would go velcro first to get more holding surface.

I had my order made out for a few sets (6) that I was going to pass out to all my friends. The clips sounded like such a good idea and I don't sew very well. Got down the order form to shipping and they wanted 35.00 for ground fed-ex. I live in Texas. I guess I can talk my wife into sewing for that much.
They lost my order.

Ditto on the velcro. I had the same problem with the floormats bunching up until I fastened them down with the velcro. Love the stuff.

My Grandpa Taught Me To Always Turn Off The Ignition When Strange S___
Happens. Unexpected W.o.t. Definitely Qualifies.

Take the mats out !!! It's a Cobra, not a Cadillac.

Check out the SPF floormats. They add two snap connectors to the floormat and the rug. No problems and they are almost invisible.

rdorman 02-12-2008 11:51 AM

Race cars do not have floor mats;) Velcro, snaps, hook and grommets, lift-a-dots + floor mats = no trouble:)

Warning - If you have to turn your ignition off due to runaway engine - be
sure you don't have to make any quick turns - your steering will lock if you
have a setup using a steering ignition lock like some replicas use.

I knew a girl who turned the ignition off in her car to coast and save gas and
ran off the road into a ditch and totaled the beater because the steering wheel
locked. She wasn't even blond. Didn't get hurt.

A: Mine is my cruiser, I want mats.
B: I have no power steering (that WILL change) so I guess I COULD have turned it off.

Thanks for the many ideas on how to sort this out.

I'm just surprised not many have taken the time to laugh with me over it.

RedBarchetta 02-12-2008 12:50 PM

All you need is four black zip ties (use black so it blends into the carpeting...if you have carpeting). Create four loops...two that penetrate the back edge/piping of the floor mat and the other two wrap around the front seat anchor bolts. Join the corresponding loops before you zip the ties, cut off excess and those mats will never move forward.

Cheap, easy, simple, effective.

Seems easy enough.

Sorry. On top of this ;) and this :) I forgot to add this

GlynMeek 02-12-2008 08:36 PM

WOW...power steering may be overkill on a 2200 lb car! If you look at my pics, you'll see that I will add ANY bell & whistle to mine (BLUSH...I even added electric door poppers to save having those ugly little handles!!!...LOL) , but I have NEVER felt the need for power steering or brakes!
