Exclamation Radio - FM and CB??

Hi all,

I was just reading the Thread on CB radios and wondered if anyone has installed a CB radio.

In particular I was wanting to use a CB aerial that was inside the car somewhere if possible.

Can this be run through the hardtop area or the body as stick on aerial, similiar to the adhesive AM/FM radio windscreen aerials?.

If I use a normal CB aerial can you run a CB radio aerial sideways out of sight - say behind the seats etc?

Additionally, I'm looking at installing an AM/FM radio - again out of site - under the dash.

Has anyone used small stereo radio speakers. I was shown these big oval speakers by the sales person and they just looked far to big.

Can I buy small speakers that have good quality out put that will not look as obvious?

:confused;

Mmmm as I now have the GT40, I have the luxury of being able to hear both the radio and a CB.

Travelling 4 hours between homes the CB radio is a good tool to have on the highway. Amazing what you hear by way of speed camera alerts and Police from the truck drivers.

Any thoughts on either the AM/FM radio speakers or the CB aerials or links would be appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.

Bernie

Bernie,
Marine dealers carry a small antenna that works well in a fiberglass car. They don't use a normal ground plain. Haven't used one in years so I really don't have any links for you.
Search marine electronics and you should be able to come up with one. Hope this helps.

Hi Bernie,

I've got a small Uniden hand held UHF. I use it when we go off road to chat with the other guys in the group. I thought about a permanent UHF install in my F100 4x4 and then later the Discovery but found the hand held unit was really convenient. You can use it in any vehicle, You can walk around with it too. I use it a lot at swap meets to chat with your friends in different areas, Let them know when you find a bargain they are looking for etc

They also have a hands free headset kit for the Uniden hand held which I thought was important in a Car. I thought it would be useful in a Cobra as you can't hear a speaker at speed.

It's 2 Watts so it has a bit more grunt than most of the hand helds. They are usually only about 600mW.

Uniden UH044

Cheers

Aussie Mike

Thanks Mike

I have a GME unit that I purchased from Oppositre Lock - Gino.

It does not have a good range - low power - and is playing up a bit.

Will follow this lead up.

Bernie

Aussie Mike

Mike,

I just chased up Green triangle Electronics the agent in the Mount. They have the unit and I'll check with them tomorrow.

I'll see if I can get a longer aerial - if appropriate - to get a better signal/range

Thanks again. Looks to be the better/best option..

Hey Bernie,

If the rear deck behind the seats is hollow as the fiberglass rolls, you could hide the antenna inside the roll, assuming the antenna is a flexible
Good Luck

Roscoe,

That's the good old days in a Cobra. The GT40 is a lot less noise.

So I am even considering the radio AM/FM and the CB.

The CB is a good tool in Australia as it is not over run by idiots between the big towns.

It's amazing just how much you hear with the truck drivers who identify speed cameras and the mobile Police.

Mmmm.... "hey we have us a convoy"..

McCobra

I have been looking for ideal mount positions and there is an option of a fixed aerial being mounted under the rear clip.

I will talk with the radio suppliers and then either go for an aerial and fixed unit or the hand held unit.

It appears that the specifications on the hand held are adequate.

I'll enquire if I can purchase a longer aerial for the hand held and what benefit that will have if any.

Thanks again

Bernie

I put a power antenna that will do am/fm/CB.

Check EBAY for a power antenna that will allow you all three and go from there.

Mmmm, we do not have luxuries that you guys in Az. have with speed restrictions.

The CB is an ideal tool for anyone who travells the amount of miles/kilometres that I do.

The truck channels constantly broadcast static and mobile camera positions - invaluable.

I know I could just sit on the speed limit.

But with cameras static and mobile that book at 2mph over - yes 4 kilometres per hour the CB is a good tool to have.

Our speed limits are 100 and yes we are fined at 104. Thats less than 2.5mph over. Now try and sit on 60mph exactly..

I'm not game to mention I'm also having air con. AM/FM radio in the car as well..
