Request help authenticating a part

I recently came into possession of a grill. It was given by a reputable source who described it as being an original grill from a 60's era 289 cobra.
It has been in storage for many years and has not been cleaned, but a small sample spot shined up nicely. It appears to be hand made in stainless steel. Should there be a stamped identification number on it somewhere? Neil |
It certainly looks like an original part. (ERA makes an aluminum repro.) I wouldn't count on there being a part number stamped on it though.

It is a grille for an AC Greyhound coupe.:( But if you turn it upside-down, it becomes a 260/289 MK II grille!:eek:

I think you will find it is made of aluminum not stainless. ;)
As Mark IV mentioned, you can use it as a smile or a frown :):( |

That was my smart-ass answer. The Greyhoud and Cobra grilles ARE the same, the late AC Ace/MK II Cobra use the greyhound grille mounted upside down. One of ACs "cost savings" that still looked good! See Trevors latest book "Cobra, the first 40 years" for pictures that confirm this fact. |

I know of an original set of seat belts from a 427 cobra, are they worth acquiring?.

The original 289 grille is a valuable item for an owner of an original 289 that needs one. If a magnet sticks to it, it isn't aluminum. This looks like an original to me. E-Bay would possibly be a good place to sell it. Regarding the seatbelts, those too are rare and would be desirable to an owner of an original car, but I would hesitate to trust my life to 40 year old belts. Most racing series require belt replacement every 2-3 years.
Those begin said, I would be interested in the original belts for one of my cars. Jim |

I am overwhelmed by the helpful responses to my questions. I especially like the tongue in cheek replies too :LOL:
Since I have only the grille, and am unlikely to acquire the rest of the car, I think I may sell it. I really don't have the slightest idea what it's worth. Any ball park value suggestions out there? Would a savvy purchaser prefer to clean it themselves, or should I shine it up? N |

A magnet test is not adequate for differentiating between plastic and stainless. A magnet will not adhere to either. It will adhere to a carbon steel based product. If if feels like plastic, it's plastic.

Well, now that I know my grille is the 'Real McCoy', I'm faced with either acquiring the rest of the car to go with the grille, or sell it. I've chosen the selling option.
