Definition of "errands" for restricted insurance policy?

I've read through many of the threads regarding insurance and wondering if anyone has had to challenge the definition of "errands" for a policy that restricts usage. I've asked several agents how the insurance companies interpret "errands" and have not received a consistent / definitive answer.

I currently have an unrestricted policy but the cost is way too high and I'd like to switch to a lower cost policy that more accurately reflects how I use the car. However, I am concerned about signing something that says I will never take the car on an errand.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience.

Just don't get in a wreck with a trunk full of groceries or the dry cleaning. ;)

That is a tough one. I hope that stopping for coffee after my wife and I went for drive on Sunday isn't considered an errand.

An undewriter will have to define the wording used in a policy. They are the representatives that decide what the acceptable risk management is. They are the "GO TO" people the agents seek outif they have a question. For an agent to do so would be a huge liability for themself for an area that is puposely left vague. Word Games

"You see it was like this.....I parked in front of your office to go in an pay my premium and THAT'S when the car was stolen."

Mine said not to level it is a mall parking lot for hours and I cannot take it to work. They do not want it sitting for long streches unattended in a parking lot, was my take on it. I asked if going out to eat was OK and they said yes, so draw your own conclusion....

A short trip taken to perform a specified task.

Basically, my interpretation would be htat you can't take it to get groceries, pay bills, etc. Pretty much ANYTHING that you would normally do in your daily car.

Sounds like a show and parade coverage. Blah.

I have to ask, but how much are you paying that is too much? I've seen people paying under $500 per year for an unlimited coverage.

I think Hagerty used to have a policy that was specifically for 'shows' and 'parades' and such. Cruising on the weekend for fun or errands of any kind were out.

I am almost embarrassed to admit that I am paying over $2200 / year through Progressive. I would be fine paying half of that for a policy that is limited in mileage but more flexible in how the car is used.

Every time I tell the wife "I'm going out for a quart of milk" it takes about an hour in the Cobra and about 15 minutes in my daily.

Mine is unrestricted use through State Farm for under $1000/year

I would SERIOUSLY look elsewhere for insurance.

try state farm, Midwest Classic, or grundy. I've always been a grundy fan. But I'm not sure if they've jumped the "No cobra" bandwagon.

I supposed that going to the gas station for a partial tank of gasoline would be considered an erand?

MaSnaka 04-29-2008 10:02 PM

State Farm, 3000 mi limit, for about 700.00 per year. Factor in multiple coverage discounts and a good driving record. Knock on wood! $2200 is a lot.

My state farm has no restrictions and I have a total on mine, Less than $1000.00 a year. Full coverage..............

Get rid of the progressive.........

I use this company.

http://www.classiccarinsurance.com/

Check them out. They insured my cobra (2500 miles unrestricted) for $400 per year and I am under 25yrs old. Can't beat it.

I checked with my insurance agent ( used for the Cobra, AMX and Corvette ) regarding errands and received the following reply:

Hi, Generally, if the sole purpose of getting in the car is to go get
groceries or the dry cleaning that's an errand. If you're out for a pleasure
drive and stop for a cup of coffee or a sandwich you're OK. All the classic
companies are looking for a low use exposure in return for the lower pricing
compared to regular insurance. The wording in the policy attempts to backup
this concept. They are not necessarily looking to deny coverage at every
turn but do look at each claim individually. I, as an agent, try to err on
the side of caution for my clients and say the farther away from the " gray
fuzzy area" you can stay the better off you'll be. In fact, if I feel
someone may use their car outside the rules of these classic policies I'll
suggest they do seek out a standard type policy where there are no
restrictions.
Hope this helps some.
Mike

Same here, State Farm, unrestricted use and 7500 miles per year. $650/year.

Guys, stop dickin around with insurance. Go with the Big Dog, you will be glad you did IF you get into an accident.

Call Whitby's if you ever doubt the way State Farm handles their Cobra claims.

Only the premium amount and when the premium is due are fully defined. Everything else is subject to negotiation. I heard Haggerty stopped writting replica (Cobra) policies. Is that true?

JHV48, can you elaborate on the Whitby's/State Farm/Cobra claims comment? How do they handle it?

John

They stated that they had had several repair jobs for Cobras and had had good experiences (hassle free) with State Farm claims reps as opposed to Geico and a few others.

That was enough to sell me.
