Real or Replica? 1967 Cobra in Colorado
Hey all,
I ran across this vehicle tonight in Denver, Colorado. The "collector vehicle" license plate reads COBRA67. Since it's a collector plate, the car (and the chassis on which it sits) must have been produced prior to 1983, which in my mind rules out many Cobra replicas - but I'm not the expert which is why I came here. Definitely not an original. Judging by the door hinges and steering column, maybe a Shell Valley.
Wrong stance, wrong door hinges, wrong wheels, Steering column too high and wrong column, wrong guage layout, Pads under front turn signals not original, etc.... |
Bolt-on wheels, interesting front flares. Not a CMC. Definitely not an original. Lone Star maybe?

It's a Shell Valley (earlier model) I know, I used to own one. I always hated the design of the door hinges. They would always interfere with my left knee when trying to extend my legs. I ended up modifying the driver's side door hinge to make it more comfortable.

Looks like a molded into the hood, hood scoop, as well as numerous other details that SCREAM 'replica'. Not even a close call...
I don't much about the Shell Valley, I've heard good things in general, the overall shape and dash layout of this car is not overly impressive. Maybe it's just the pictures but it appears the windshield 'rake' is not layed back enough, seems to sit up straight to much. Getting antique, classic, historic, etc. license plates is fairly easy in many states, regardless of when a replica was actually made. A little 'fudging' here and there with the paperwork is generally all that is required. DON'T try to 'fudge' ANYTHING in Calif and it's becoming increasingly more worriesome in other states as well. Best to be right up front about what it is and what it isn't, or risk possible fraud charges. |

Aside from the dash, roll bar, & wheels, the biggest give away to me was the windshield rake - something that should be easy enough to fix. Nice car though. :)

DacotaCO, nice ride all around, Club Cobra do get fussy when a question leads to a critique of ANY specific replica. The only Cobras that get a 'pass' are the originals, and even some of them catch a little grief! :D
Recently it was CSX2001, which sports both AC and the early Shelby emblems front and back, BOTH emblems one above the other. Hey, it's an original car and the picture was taken in the early 60's. Therefore it HAS to be 'correct' and 'legitimate'. Just between me and you, it looks awful (funky roll bar too)... :LOL: |

It would take more pictures than you posted to determine if it was a real original Cobra or not.
However, it looks from the pictures to have the original style uprights in front (from what little I can see of them). And the framework in the nose looks correct. If it is an original, it looks like a slabside that has had some fender work done around the flairs. However, this is just a WAG with the small amount of information shown. |
Any 427 Cobra on the stret with side pipes is a fake/copy. There were only 16 originals with side pipes. Some of the street cars were converted but they are not comp cars so they are copies as well even though they are original cars.. I have only ever seen one real comp car on the road and that was between two shops here in Scottsdale...

The other is not, at least for those who own a replica. #51 looks to be real (CSX, COX etc) in my eyes based on these pics. 1) The firewall is black which is a sign that some age is present and KMS cars are usually shiny. 2) Larger front blinker lense does not look to be the normal replica type. 3) Scoop is rivoted 4) Original style deck emblems 5) Roll bar, 289 style is a bit funky. 6) Hubs look right 7) Braided lines, updates for safety Am I right? Do I win more pics of this car? If it is a KMS they did a great job with details. |

Collector or antique plates don't mean much as each state has a myriad of different registration options. In Florida you can register any replica car as the year of the car it replicates, automatically qualifying for "antique" plates in Florida. RD
