I've always given kudos to owners of the vintage Cobras who drive them. Now I think it's probably better to keep them in a museum and own replicas for driving. They're just worth too much. Bummer.

CHANMADD 08-05-2008 09:47 AM

Who say's it's an original car!

mln385 08-05-2008 09:53 AM

I all ready had this happen to me... pedal stuck on carpet, fortunately I had the presence of mind to turn the key off and coast to side of road to fix the issue.

So much for those $150 'Cobra' floor mats......

Agreed. In an unfortunate accident we lost one of our Capital Area Cobra Club members and the media reports were all "1965 Cobra."

SKINNEDR 08-05-2008 11:14 AM

This seems to be typical with these cars, then what can be done to mitigate this problem?
Dex....

Excaliber 08-05-2008 11:42 AM

Mitigate the problem? First, take out the dang floor mats! Second, don't drive with 'flip flops' (personal experience talking here). Those dang flip flops can tie themselves into knots around the brake, clutch and gas pedal in short order. :D

As far as year of car goes, there is nothing you can do about that. If the news article referred to it as as a '2001 FFR' (or what ever) the public wouldn't have a clue what their talking about. That is why some States CORRECTLY identify the MODEL of a replica as a "1965" Cobra, or what ever year is applicable to the car in question. News articles carefully avoid the 'is it real' question and wisely so.

Rev Limiters Save Lives

... and you should have a rev limiter. If your floor mats jump up on the pedal, or you bust your throttle springs, or if the linkage just sticks at WOT, you can throw your clutch in and the the engine will be bouncing off the rev limiter until you regain your senses and turn the key off.

:)

As Ernie said, Flip Flops are as bad as non fitting floor mats. Also from personal experience and a broken toe. My floor mats I took and measured and then cut them so they lay flat and the throttle can't get to them. The carpet I had molded so it was out of the way of all the pedals.

Regarding originality, I should know better by now. When I see '64 Cobra, I assume original. Truth is, few folks outside this forum even know the difference. Well at least that's one body that won't have to go back to the Mig factory.

Excaliber 08-05-2008 01:30 PM

There are more FIA style, street style 289's and slab sides around currently than there have been in the past, but your point is well taken. There was a report of a 1964 Cobra for sale (here and on SAAC.com) that was CLEARLY a 427 body style and COULD NOT be confused with any 1964 edition of a Cobra. And yet, the seller was adamant about it being a 1964, go figure... For all we know about the car in question in this thread it actually was a 427 body style that someone called a 1964, incorrectly.

1985 CCX 08-05-2008 05:42 PM

Fran has a 289 in that area? I hope it was not him.....
Either way hope injuries were light, the car can be rebuilt....

LRRCobradreamer 08-05-2008 07:58 PM

This is exactly the reason I removed the floor mat and replaced it with a polished diamond plate. It looks great and is very functional.

I've got floor mats in my SuperFormance, and there's no way the mat could get so bunched up on the pedals that it would interfere with the brake or gas. If you want mats just pin them down.

Flip flops in any car = stupid. The biggest problem I've had is that I forgot I had my New Balance (size 13) shoes on an took my car for drive and couldn't figure why the pedal action didn't feel right...need to stick with with the narrow Puma's or Nike's.

Huh? You're not serious.. are you? Typical? First I've heard of such an incident.(or at least anyone that has the stupidity to admit it) You can "mitigate" this by using your phuquing noggin.

PANAVIA 08-06-2008 01:19 AM

Doug-- go find these.

Adidas by Porsche design. slippery slipper type sneakers with no laces to get caught.

Nordstroms carries them.

Stingray tested-Cobra Approved.

nevermind65 08-06-2008 05:20 AM

My car has floor mats with snaps in 6 locations to hold them in place. I learned about the flip-flops the same way most of you have. Never again.

There's quite a few original Cobras around here and it's not a rare occurrence to see one, 2 weeks ago a friend was on his was home and saw a red Cobra off the side of the road stranded, it happen to be CSX-2292! My friend was driving CSX-2575....

Fran always has 2 or 3 Cobras..

TButtrick, you are acting like a T(ASS)ttrick.
I never said this is typical. I was only quoting what was said previously. (Read above, it has happened to more than one person.)
I want to believe that it happen to more than one person and it's been blown out of proportion. At the end of every drive with my car, and I'm back in my garage, I vacuum and make sure evrything is back in place the way it suppose to be. My carpet never will accumulate so that it will never cause that kind of problem.
You don't have to act like an A$$ the way you are currently doing...
