ZDDP oil additive
I see that Eastwood now offers a ZDDP oil additive. Has anyone tried this? Or have any opinions on it? I've asked around the local parts stores and no-one seems to carry any Zinc additives.

10 qt system so a three pack would not be enough for two oil changes. Hmmm, I'll need a 6 pack after seeing the cost. :D

Oil with the proper amount of Zinc Phosphate in it is still available. Joe Gibbs racing has it in both break in conventional (BR) and syn. versions. Also I believe Valvoline VR-1 racing has the Zinc also. There is one other producers that excapes me right now. Also Chevy's (bad word on this sit) break in oil is largely ZDDP. The racers know where to find it as a lot of them still run flat tappet.

I like to run full synthetic, . . . (Mobil 1 or Royal Purple). With the Eastwood ZDDP additive, I can still run my choice of full synthetic oils and also have the ZDDP. The best of both worlds.

Running three cars with flat-tappet engines and have worked with a lot of race engines, I've settled on Brad Penn oil. As with Joe Gibbs oil, it has sufficient ZDDP in it, but at a lower cost. Nice thing is Brad Penn has a broad selection of weights including break-in oil.

Been using this and selling it through our online store for a year or so. The convenience factor is hard to beat. Use your favorite oil and just add zinc. Not a bad deal.

I'd like to try some of that Brad Penn oil but the web site leaves me wondering how to order or buy it. Due to expensive shipping costs to Hawaii it may not be cost effective for me anyway. Perhaps the additive is the way to go...

might not be easy to get for you. brad-penn is the old kendall racing oil
refinery located in PA. the network of distributors does not reach past the tristate area i have been exchanging emails with them to trying to get my company to be a distributor for their oils, efforts are rather slow, i keep getting sent to other distributors who don,t even stock the stuff . when i get some where i will surely post it Fred.. |
They have dealers on e-bay. Shipping will be steep though.

Just use CI-4 or CJ-4 rating oil for diesels. It has more than enough Zinc for flat tappet motors. Additives are a waste of money.

I'm in Connecticut and getting Brad Penn is all but impossible. They don't call back and they don't seem to be in a hurry to sell their product. It looks like Mobil1 and the additive is the way to go.

Penn Oil
I have had good luck with LN Engineering, they sell Brad Penn and they have a decent write up on oils on their website (too bad it is for Porsche).

He addresses adding too much ZDDP as well and what these additive can do for you. It is a good technical article. I would recommend calling him if you have questions, he is very pleasant and has helped me out in the past, even though I have never owned a Porsche! |
I got my Brad Penn oil from Kennedy Oil Co. in High Point , NC .... they will ship pretty much anywhere as there are no dealers here in SC . Phone is 336-885-5184 .... they are an Authorized Brad Penn Distributor , and I thought the pricing was reasonable .
Use it in my flat tappet 427 S/O in my Galaxie and in the Cobra ( hydraulic roller cam ) . As far as customer service .... I sent an e mail to Brad Penn and they gave me Kennedy`s name and then followed up with a call to see if I had been contacted by Kennedy .... maybe I was just holding my mouth right ??? |
I've been using Shell Rotella which seems to have the ZDDP additive in sufficient amounts. HOW EVER, I've been hearing 'rumors' about Rotella lowering the ZDDP amounts or discontinuing the additive all together, leaves me feeling nervous.

Shell cut back the zinc content in Rotella last January per the EPA. I bought 3 cases a couple of years ago and am down to my last oil change. I'm going to go with Brad Penn from now on.

Here's the levels for the old and new Rotella -
...........................CI-4..............CJ-4 Zinc.................. 1390 ppm.......1210 ppm Phospherous.........1265 ppm.......1110 ppm There's still more than enough to protect your motor. This Zinc thing is blown way out of proportion. Jim |
STP claims that their oil additive contains a sufficient amount of ZDDP.
