Couldn't you just shorten up the 4 primary pipes just after the 90* bend but prior to the merge collector, then add that inch or two to the muffler length? Easier to do if you buy a custom muffler length (i.e. Stainless Specialties, who will make any length you specify). Then all the proportions (which, like many, I'm big on) remain relatively the same and closer to "factory" (for what that term is worth).

I guess I could have cut it anywhere I wanted to. I made a fixture to align and weld on, so I just layed everything out and trimmed accordingly. I left the primaries as long as they were and trimmed the turn out since to me that is not the important length to worry about.
