Fuel Fire. Coolant on the ground. The worst sound to hear... WHoomp, followed by instant heavy smoke. Maybe an under hood Halon extinguisher might have helped.

West Virginia tags, but I can assure you there are no palm trees in West Virginia. How bad would it suck to have this happen and also be on vacation with your car?

That is one of my worst nightmares. Assuming the driver got out safely, he must have felt so helpless!

I think some of the fire spots can be buffed out?

That's exactly why I have a fuel cutoff switch and a fire extinguisher.

Yep, I have the fuel cut off switch on my dash right next to my battery cut off. You never know when something like that can happen. I saw a late model Nissan Pickup on the freeway here that was burning in a similar way. Scarry and sad.

This thread could become the poster-child for mechanical fuel pumps.

I too prefer an electric fuel pump, so when I designed my dash, I went back to something I liked in the military aircraft I used to fly. Of the dozens of switches in the cockpit, a few were guarded by red covers that served two purposes. First, they drew attention to the critical switches that might need attention during an emergency. Second, they were installed so that closing the covers moved the switches to the default position you'd want during an emergency. So, in addtion to the big red battery disconnect switch on my dash, I have red covers that will shut off the switches for my ignition and fuel pump when closed.

Seeing this should encourage everyone to take a moment to check their entire fuel system, and consider installing a fire extinguisher.

I ran an oil pressure activated switch that would shut off my fuel pump if the pressure dropped below 5 pounds. That would work ok in a wreck but I got to thinking about what would happen if I just had a line break and start spewing gas on the hot engine or something that didn't affect the oil pressure, so I went to a manual shut off switch also.
