Exhaust exit tip angle?
I'm planning to rebuild my exhaust and wondering whether anybody has experience with any end outflow direction besides 90 deg. from the auto body regarding sound, problems, etc?

It's a little,(very little) quieter when the cutouts angle downward but the drawback is they'll blow a dust cloud all around you each time you stop. It's best if the cutouts face out.

I agree with Tim. I tried it once and with just a very little down angle they blew dust all over the place and I really couldn't notice any lowering of the noise. I just got a set of the small ear plugs over at the shooting range and used those. Illegal in this state, but so is anything you do. And all they did was take the sharpness out of the exhaust. I could still hear other traffic coming as I didn't get the kind that shut out all noise.

I angled my down and found very little difference. I ended up having super quiet pipes made up by Breeze Automotive but I still like the look better of the down turned tips. I've never noticed them blowing enough dust around to the extent that it bothered me but then again, I'm not standing still when I rev the engine. Works great for cleaning the freshly cut grass from the drive. I still have the other set of VERY loud pipes angled the same way that I can throw on when I need my noise fix now and again but I'll still take the quiet pipes over the loud any day.

My old pipes are nothing but a glorified leaf blower. It's a good way to clean the grass and leaves off my driveway ! :p
I haven't used my angle finder (for the sprint car wings) on my turn outs but, check out the photo ! My new ss pipes, I will slightly give them 1-2 degree downward angle. This is an under the car system, more like FIA type on 289 body car, but the tip itself angles at about 45 degrees than 90 degrees. It is a straight cut through the 3" mandral bend that I used for the turnout. When I constucted these the intent was to develop primary tube length instead of the block hugger type that were used on the Road Race 289's. They are very efficient and work well, you should be able to hear me driving from where you live :) :) As far as sound reduction, with a big inch motor developing the HP yours is and with the confines of a sidepipe design it will be pretty LOUD or you will sacrifice large HP. So weigh your options and develop a plan. Here is a link to a very good company in Rancho Cordova that does 1st rate work. The used to buld some systems for some of the Trans Am cars a few years ago. I guess if you live in a dust bowl region, the dust could present a "problem".

slightly turned down. I had the old pipes turned down more and they did blow quite a bit of dust around.

Angled UP!?
Great information thanks all! I actually eyeballed my pipes more closely and the outlets are turned UP by several degrees ha! I'm not sure what I'll do with my pipes because while I like the looks of them, they come with a small internal baffle, and even with that and no packing semi-LOUD is the rule! I'm looking for someone to custom fab me a 2 5/8" ID baffle tube that I can wrap 3/8" of fibreglass around and still fit into the 3 3/8" ID sidepipe.... well, wouldn't you know someone with a WC cobra wouldn't do things the "right" way :LOL::JEKYLHYDE;) I'll check out the Rancho Cordova shop Rick.

Do you have a pic of the entire side pipe ?
They look great. How do you like the SS sound compared to mild steel ? Do you get the discoloring and if so, do you polish them ? I'll have to see if I like the yellow/orange look, as some owners like the color. Just like some people like the blue with chrome. |
they'll get a gold tint toward the front but thats it.
