Aldan Coilover/Shocks

I now have about 4000 miles on my car and my right rear Aldan Eagle has blown it fluid out. I have not had any track time on car yet only street miles. Is this typical of Aldans? Have others had similar problems and if so how was Aldan to deal with? This just happened last night so I have not contacted them yet.

I don't know if it's normal or not but I have one of four that leaks as well. I haven't sent it back so I don't know about their service. I do know that when I bought them, Alden worked with me on the springs to cure my bottoming out and they were great to deal with then. We swapped the springs out a couple of times and no charge except shipping. Let us know how they handle your problem.

I know the General Manager at Aldan and they stand behind there product.
Give them a call and I am sure they will work with you.

btw call after 10 am west coast time, he always surfs at our local beach in the morning.

My Aldans were too soft for my taste. I called and they recommended replacing the fluid with a higher viscosity, and did it at no charge (except for shipping). Great to work with for me.

I have tried Aldans and had continuous leaking problems. They have always been very courteous and repaired them at no charge when they were returned. I know others have used them with great success but they just didn't work for me in my application.
I used them for a little over a year and finally changed them after the third leak repair. I have had no leak problems with the new shocks.
If anyone is interested, I have 2 #656 and 2# 754 Aldans for sale .... cheap.

I have aldans and have not had a problem with them.

I called and was surprised to get the general manager who was beyond helpful when I was first setting them up.

I think I would trust them to take care of you.

Just my humble opinion.

I had aldans on the rear of my Midstates, both leaked. Aldan rebuilt rebuilt them, had another leak within 100 miles. I used non adjustable stock Jag coilovers, they worked fine..........Ron

Thanks for the Feed Back

I talked to Aldan today and will send back next week. I am going to purchase another pair of rear c/o's and use the Aldans as spares.

My back passenger side Aldan shock broke the shaft, now I get to do the pogo. I think from what I have heard I am going with the QA-1's doesnt seem like those shocks have problems like the Aldan's

I think I my need to stiffen the rear coils. When I hit a large dip in the road I can hear the coils mash. Anyone have the contact phone for Aldan? I tried to access the contact field on their website and received a failure.

Don't forget that stiffening the rear coils will increase oversteer, so it might not be the best way to deal with your situation. You may need a rubber cushion to prevent the shock from bottoming out or a damper with a shorter closed length.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try some cushions and if that doesn't solve my problem I'll call Aldan. I read in the above emails the general manager works with you on determining what works best. I'll mention the possibility of oversteer.

Try 310 834 7654 or 310 834 7478.

They seem to have good support.

Aldans are making me suspect

I returned my leaking Aldan and they warranted for no cost. Less than 200 miles later right rear blew all of its fluid out. I am going to send back, means side lining Cobra again. My problem is finding other brand replacements as Vui(Pacific Roadster) built all mounts to take 5/8" bolts for coilovers. Does anyone know of another brand with 5/8" shock eyes/

SF_SN888KE 08-06-2009 09:53 PM

FWIW, sent in my Aldan double adjustables to be re-valved softer (testing different shocks and springs). Discovered one shaft was bent. They replaced the shaft under warranty - no charge (purchased over 3 years ago. Less than 4000 miles on shocks.) They came back polished! Only 100 miles since re-valve, no leaks yet.

Can't you change the bushings or bearings to fit 5/8" on other brands? Are your springs too soft, bottoming out, and blowing up the shock?

Andrew Teal 08-06-2009 10:42 PM

I have had them on my Cobra for 11 yrs no problems.

No bottoming or misalignment

Shocks do not bottom. I put a nylon tie on shaft to check travel. I have been looking for shocks that have bushed ends like Aldans and not rod ends like most shocks have. Shocks with rod ends are threaded with 1/2" to take 1/2" rod ends. I have not found rod ends with 1/2" thread and 5/8" bore for mounting bolt.

Did you let them know this is a second time return?

Dang.

2nd shock

This is 2nd shock, 1st was right rear, now left rear. Very flustrating to say least.
