Oh, the plot thickens!!! The frame before the other shots clearly shows the Vette had locked his fronts as you can see the smoke from the tires.

Probably just as well he retired when he did. Looked like he was doing a good job chasing down that yellow Corvette coupe but then he just never came around again. A few minutes later a Studebaker lost his engine coming out of the chicane and dumped oil on the track that caused some severe problems. While they were trying to get the Studebaker set up for the tow truck several more cars came around and hit the oil. Most managed to hang on but the Nascar that was running did a 180 and slid along the wall for a little ways. He got sorted out and almost got rear-ended by a Porsche that just barely kept control through the oil. Another 8 or 10 cars came through, all in various states of control after the oil, until a Sunbeam Tiger lost it completely and spun into the safety truck. Completely crushed the front and rear of the Tiger but the driver looked o.k. Upshot- Studebaker with blown engine, Nascar with wall damage to the passenger side, Sunbeam Tiger probably totaled, safety truck with a banged up left rear corner and flat tire and a lot of folks who probably needed a change of underwear after coming through it all. Biggest plus was that nobody appeared to be hurt.

Uh-ohh...bent sheet metal = a little quiet time. It is nice to see somebody actually drive the car, though.

Another Corvette........Bittin by the Snake.........

My take on this is that the Corvette locked the fronts a bit and pinched that corner too much. Does it look that way to you guys too?

That is a real common problem in that turn. The best viewing at PIR is the stands just past the chicane on the inside. You can see all the action in turn 1 (the one in the picture) as the drivers are braking off the long front straight at very high speeds to a VERY slow speed chicane corner.

A couple years ago, an original GT40 and Parker Johnstone's IMSA national champion Acura open wheel car had a terrific duel for several laps, but especially exciting as they came down the front stretch flat out, then tried to beat each other to/through this corner. Great racing until I think the GT40 driver finally lost his nerve and decided not to trash his valuable racer.

BTW, that Corvette is no slouch in the historic races each year. As you can see in the pics, it just plain gets real crowded in that corner early in the race before the cars get spread out a bit.

LMH, I could not make out if Click or one of his guys was driving. For those of you that don't know, Jim Click is a very large auto dealer in Tucson, Ariz and southern California. Besides the Cobra he has a very nice original GT40 which he also races in historic events.
