My point exactly.
I give respect (what mods you got?) and talk to anyone interested in a race. Normally you will discover who is fast, and it is over. I did meet a Nova at test and tune (track night) once after talking at a cruise.
I'm not everyones Dad on the street, so I don't talk to them like I am, no matter what age.

PS There are some guys on here that do not know what serious power is on the street these days. Get over yourself, 1,000 hp is the new 500.
You don't know what your talking about. TT Terminators making 1,100hp as DD's lurk on the streets. There are skiddles making sick numbers at the track.

Street racing is dangerous. The roads stink for high speed passes, and it puts others at risk that don't even know they are at risk.
But come on, some of the holy posting on this thread have at least pulled the label off of a pillow before.

I raced a guy in fairly highly modified STI through some mountain roads, and the guy was shocked. The STI cornered better, but the cobra had more than enough power to make up for it and the STI could not shake me. There was no room to pass on the two lane road, but I could have easily on the straights if there was room. I stopped at a gas station and the guy pulled in to check out my car and could not stop talking about it. Cool younger guy that was shocked that old technology could outperform his tricked out STI.
BTW, there were no other cars around, and it is a very rural area.

Several years ago a gentleman in a Lamborgini pulled up beside me at a light, both of us with respect for each other,(being civil)light conversation, complemented each others rides.Anyway, the drag racer in me reared it's ugly head,so I had to ask and pointed (no lol's in sight) to the next light? He smartly declined! The 460/550+ in my car is dailed in and very crispy, the coilover suspension has been scaled,so it tracks like on rails, even when the tires are being shredded. It launches very hard and straight.Oh! how I love this car,it's great reading what the rest of you have to say about yours!

The scary part about street racing in California is that if you get caught, your ride is impounded AND CRUSHED!
Kind of makes street racing a real gamble.

In Dallas, the long arm of the law has gotten proactive. After numerous deaths of innocent bystanders the police cruise the local spots heavily and have deployed 'bait cars' to catch the streeters. You challenge one of them to race (even just revving the motor) and you will be pulled over and taken off to jail (car to impound at $175 per). Found guilty? Fine starts at $2500 and rises exponentially from there. Lots of cars go bye-bye as owner must provide receipts for high dollar parts to prove they are not stolen. While I disagree with a lot of the tactics, I approve of the intent. Street racing deaths are much rarer, and the streets are relatively calm again. It makes zero sense to street race and risk grandma in her Buick when Ennis has low buck night drags, and you have real road courses close by. Let's get on the track and see how fast you REALLY are!
For the occasional idiot, I have a badge from my son's playset that looks just like the ones a state trooper carries...from a distance. I used an old flip up leather notepad and superglued it in and it works like magic relieving brain cramps. You should see the looks on their faces and how fast they exit the roadway!

I get them coming on to my car all the time. Mostly in hopped up rice rockets, & telling me I'm got "prove it". I just tell them Carroll Shelby proved it all 40 years ago, for all time. I don't have to add a thing. It's already been said & it's old news.

While sitting at idle, I cup a hand around one ear and shout over my pipes "Is your car running??"
I always get the bird.

I've had some real nasty disagreements with Racer X who doesn't post here as much any more. But there is one subject we do agree on. Street racing is for idiots for many reasons. Nothing good can come from it. Disaster is the only tangible byproduct.
Check your insurance policies. Most have a disclaimer/exclusion for street racing. Accident while street racing.? Sorry Charlie. Likely no coverage, property damage or liability. Talk about losing sleep.
Injuries from street racing? Not only do you lose your liability coverage you very well may be looking at an indictment for a range of charges depending on seriousness. Hows assault by auto if there are injuries or vehicular manslaughter if there is loss of life grab you??
Be smart, just look indignant and say no.
Last time I had a ricer kid want to race me I was in my Carrera at a light. It was some Mitsubishi whatever, probably with NOS. He kept reving his engine at the light. I put my window down and he put his down. I said "Don't you have homework to do or something. Grow up". and just slowly pulled away.
Be smart. Keep the "racing" for the track or autocrosses.

REAL 1,
"I said "Don't you have homework to do or something. Grow up". and just slowly pulled away."
Good one - I'll remember that one, although, as you know, in the Cobra,
hearing and talking isn't always an option.

Hey Real,
Street racing or just going for groceries exposes you to this litigious world of ours. Your right about asking for possible grief if you do race. I think smart ass remarks to a stranger at some light is more dangerous though. The money involved/invested in some of these cars by a 20 year old screams (freelance pharmaceutical distribution manager) and many don't respond to criticism well. I agree just shaking your head no thanks is not as much fun.

Vettestr: There is risk in everything we do. You could slip and fall and kill you self stepping out of the shower.
There is risk and there is begging for trouble without a parachute.
I see a big difference.
The remark was made to what clearly appeared to be a highschool kid in what appeared to be a low budget Mitsu with NOS. But I agree sometimes discretion is the better part of valor.

I usually say something witty after eyeballing their car like "who you kidding, you or me?"

As far as the street racers go, I will smile and "toss them some pipes" but that's about it. Whether my car goes faster or not is (mostly or somewhat)irrelevant to me. I think it's the coolest car on the planet and that's what matters most...

Great line Roscoe, mind if I steal that one?
Real, There is a lot to be said about reading the moment. I miss the good old days when you pretty much knew what the other car was running and that was all that mattered.
As a kid I was a medium fish in a small pond. New cars would show up now and then but word would spread pretty quick. To this day I remember all the ribbing and abuse after getting my ass handed to me by an AMC Gremlin ! The tail lights are about all I got too see or know about that car and at a distance.

I unknowingly raced a 350Z the other day. I was exiting the highway at the light turning left and mostly just enjoying the day. When the light turned green I started going when I heard squealing tires and I panicked assuming that someone was skidding into the intersection. It was probably the wrong reaction but I floored it to get out of there ASAP. Once I was half way across the overpass and well out of harms way I let off and looked around to see what happened, that is when I saw the Z that was "racing" me. He passed and continued to pass other people in turn lanes and cut other people off as he sped away. A mile or so later I was behind him at a light with the car that was immediately behind me on the off ramp now next to me, the guy next to me rolled his window down and loudly laughed and thanked me for "blowing the Z away". After that light changed the Z went right back to driving like a doofus, I cruised home still shaking from the fear of getting hit in the intersection.
I was challenged once, a kid commented about the Nitrous bottle (aka fire extinguisher) between my seats and asked if I wanted to race for money. I just said that I pay the entry fee for Bandimere but that is it for money.

I had the power/weight ratio advantage, so I wasn't worried about losing.
I did enjoy watching his ego go flacid when I ask him if he was joking...
I tell ya, after watching "Gran Torino" I almost laugh out loud when I see a white kid dressed up like an urban black kid. The guy in the WRX was one of those...
