Cobra Kit Selection
Hi Guys
I am getting ready to purchase a roller kit. I have found several kits. 1. B and B, Hunter Cobras, 427 Holiday Cobras and Shell Valley. Does anyone know of these kits and which one is the easiest to build and has the best support. I have restored cars but never worked with fiberglass cars and built suspension on short cars. Is IRS suspension necessary or will a solid axle do fine. No, racing intended just cruisin and car shows. Thanks, Jim |
Never heard of Hunter, or 427 Holiday (maybe someone else can jump in on those). B&B is supposed to make a real nice product, and Shell Valley has been around a long time (re-emerged recently through some change in ownership).
If a roller is part of your criteria, you might also look at Unique, they make an excellent product and their Deluxe Pallet Kit is supposed give you a real good chance at finishing it up nicely. Lone Star may have a roller, but not sure on that. And depending on your budget, there are several other top-end companies that are well known. IRS v. solid-axle: you'll get numerous takes on this. IRS will typically be more expensive and more complex, but most assuredly offers a better ride. |
Do a search on here on Club Cobra for Darryl Holiday. I believe the spelling is correct, but I could be wrong. Anyway, do the search......:eek:

Do lots of homework on any manufacturer. It's alot of money,so choose what is right for you.You should also visit the manufacturers before you do anything.They talk big on the phone.
I never heard of Hunter either. Shell valley makes a good kit. B&B Mfg. does too, but be careful, the customer service is not too good. I have heard lots of guys saying they can not get ahold of them after they purchase a kit from them. Go to cobracountry.com and look at their blogs and visit with Curt Scott. He will help you alot. Barry McGill is getting ready to build a cobra. Barry was the other half of B&B Mfg. He will make you a great kit, but again ,do your homework and even visit with guys with different cobras and see what service they got. |
One other thing to consider: it is a total buyer's market right now. Deals are everywhere. There are complete, already-driven cars out there starting in the low to mid-20's. That may a way to go, depending on how much the assembly-process is important to you.

build or buy???
You can buy a used Cobra for about half of what it would cost you to build in today's market. Find the brand you like, the motor and color you want, then buy it. Change or add the little things that you want. For the street a live axle is fine. 300 to 500 flywheel horsepower is good. You can buy a Cobra with a stock 351W or 390 FE and hop it up later if you want to. You will have the exhaust system and the block to work with. Stroker kits and heads are available for horsepower upgrades. A good paint job will be "lot" cheaper than a repaint. Seats and interiors can be replaced. Roll bars? not so easy to change or add, depends on the kit. Check the used market, a lot of great deals out there. You can drive now and upgrade in the winter months, that way you can enjoy your Cobra year round.
Do your research, know your brands and selling prices. Shop and buy. There are a lot of quantity Cobra for sale in the $30,000 to $45,000 range. Dwight |

I built a Hunter cobra and enjoyed it. It handled as well or better than my Kirkham and was very inexpensive to build. It has a great body that looks correct and it sits right, one of the things that is very important in selecting a car to build. Randy Hunter is very easy to work with , but it is a low volume car and so not much forum support. also consider Unique if you are set on building.
