I know another car color question

I have original Arntz, Contemporary and Unique brochures from early 70. Maybe their first ones. Waited a long time. Finally, I am going to retire and build my Cobra. In putting my plan together color is of course a question. I like Black, Red, White, British Green, Blue, but these are quite common. They say (someone) that a great looking car can be painted any color, an ugly car paint it black. A cobra is great looking, so why don't we see more variety in color. I know alot is to keep the racing tradition, but if these car were popular in the late 60's and 70's, how come we do not see the vibrant colors that were out then like the wild purples, bright greens (I may like that), and others.

They're out there, I'v seen them. I'v seen orange, which I did not like. I have seen copper, which was pretty cool. Silver is always popular. I even saw a dark gray metallic that I liked a lot.

Look at cars in parking lots. Find cars of a similar size, and see what colors you like. Then just order the factory paint.

... and the "new car" shows, like "World of Wheels" and what not. That's what I did. A base coat, clear coat combo is really the way to go unless you're wedded to an "old school" paint look.

You sound like my parallel universe twin. I also have Cobra brochures for Arntz, Contemporary, Unique and ERA from about 1980. Planned to start one several times but ended up with a couple Corvettes over time. Now, I'm planning to retire and I finally placed a deposit on an ERA street Cobra kit a few months ago as a retirement project. I'm kind of toying with silver - just because of that old copy of a Road & Track magazine I have from 1974 where one of the editors wrote a story about his purchase of a silver 427 street Cobra and did a road test on it.

Don't know about the color but good luck with your plan.

any color but the multi colors, blue, green, purple, look good on a Cobra. Some better than others.

P.S. I have pulled into truck stops, rest stops, gas stations, etc for the last 7 years and they all walk pass the other Cobras and look at the black one first, then they look at the rest. I drive a yellow one and it's the last one they look at. Black then red or blue then the other colors and then yellow.

My cobra is yellow but I love this black / red combo or the red / black combo


there is alway blue / white



if it's painted black, the body work better be perfect, if not you can see every mistake in the body

I have 5 corvettes, I can not believe they distracted me from my over all favorite car, Cobra, I do like the 67 427 convertible also.

I am in the same universe as you guys ...

- Have an Arntz brochure from around 1978 along with an 8x10 B&W glossy photo.

- Read the same R&T article with the editor driving away in his Cobra as bits and pieces of sound insulation were coming out of the mufflers. As I recall, he loaned the car to the Peterson museum in LA. I probably have that issue in a box somewhere ...

- Last but not least ... in a few weeks, my ERA FIA 'street' car build will start!

For color ... a few years ago, there was a gentleman from the midwest that had a 427 ERA that was painted Maroon (a Chrysler color) and it was stunning. That color really looked good on the car. If did not have my heart set on a small block FIA ... I would have taken a serious look at that car.

As mentioned above ... look around and see what colors look good to you. Best of luck to you guys with your projects !

Boy we sure have been stalling on completing our cars. Maybe there should be an age limit on when you have to start you Cobra project. That may force a few to get it going. Maroon is good, I like all the old standard colors, still looking for something a little different that doesn't moc the marque.

They have a good color thread going on at the Factory Five Forum. Pretty interesting. You gat a good feel of all colors, they have a seperate thread for each color, gren, black, red, burgandy, blue etc. Going to an entire street of car dealerships is what really helped me, not really focusing on the cars of course, but the colors both new and old.

I checked it out and there is a good selection of bright colors, HOWEVER I have not seen a bright green, maybe a matalic, or lime green.

In the lonestar forum if you hunt around you will see someone's House of Kolor Emerald green and another's Kawasaki Green with matte black stripes.

Or you can just enlist and post a request.

Wow, I like Lime green but it is a little much for me on a cobra, looked good on my spitfire years ago. So now maybe a metalic emeral bright green

Iv seen a medium metallic emerald green, with green ghost stripes. It looked Really good.
