No, it will live in infamy in the annals of Club Cobra lore and will be brought out from time to time like your spinster Aunt brings out her finest table cloth that has the red wine stain in the corner that just won't come out....

Took the words right out of my mouth, except the "aunt and the red wine stain" metaphor and/or analogy. A classic thread from the past.

Don't discount FFR just because you want a turn key. There are companies like LEVY RACING that build turnkey FFR roadsters and coupes for customers. You pick the color, and the details you want - they build it for you - done by pros. So you CAN buy a turnkey FFR (probably a 12 week turnaround time - maybe less); You can buy Backdraft's or Superformance from dealer inventories. ERA will build you a turnkey - but that is more like a 12 month turnaround. That's what mine was. And there are a lot of good cars advertised on Cobra Country. Kirkham will also do a turnkey - a jewell. Each car is somewhat different - and that takes some time to learn but is part of the fun. Good luck.

I did a Google search on "moronic car builders" and it linked to his name and that epic CC thread. ;):3DSMILE:

On topic, you should sit in/drive as many of your affordable choices as possible. Once you find one (or two) that you fit best in, then buy as much Cobra as you can afford.

I couldn't be more pleased with my SPF, and I bought it pre-owned and saved a lot of money (again, I bought as much Cobra as I could afford at the time).

Good luck in your search and don't compromise on color, etc. The car you desire is out there. Be patient.

So, until the Kirkham visit I was going for a FFR, but the more I think about building a FFR, the more I want a roller. So right now I'm looking at SPF and Backdraft. Backdraft is easy to find a price on, 32K, SPF is a different story.

Can someone tell me how it works buying a SPF? Do I only have the option of what the dealers have in stock?? I have 2 dealers in my area, 1 in Reno and 1 in Redwood City, SF Bay area, 2 hrs either way. Can I order one with the color combo I want? I would like Bright Silver and indigo blue strips, Does anyone know what a roller does cost??? Is there a warranty that comes with a roller? Like I stated before, pretty set on the motor and the trans.

Thanks as always,

Craig

Hi Craig,

I work with Bob & Dennis in Redwood City/Reno. You can order an SPF in any offered color combo, or request any special color. The only real advantage to buying what someone has in stock, is you may get a better deal and you won't have to wait. I personally wanted a specific color when I bought mine, so I ordered it and waited. I liked the wait, as it gave me a chance to decide on an engine package and work out all of the legistics. A basic rollor goes for 42,900, but as I stated before there are incentives going on due to the economy. The rollers come with a one year warranty, bumper to bumper. If you are available, either come by the dealer or come by Club Auto Sport in San Jose Saturday to the show & shine. I will have my SPF there, I know of several others and at least a couple of CSXs that will be there. Feel free to contact me if you would like additional information.

Craig, I have a BDR that is three years old and would highly recommend it for the money. I am running a 393 stroker with TKO 600. It rides good and performs very well on the road and track. A couple minor problems I had were taken care of by BDR immediately. I built my car for what I would have spent on just the SPF roller. If you want me to email some pics send me a note to: bigstew817@verizon.net

Thanks Andrei. I talked to Dennis this AM and had a good discussion. He answered many of my questions. Like you, I'm good with the ordering part because I have some other things I need to work on (personal stuff) during the next 4-6 months. I guess I need to decided if the extra 10K Vs. the BDR is worth it. What I need to do is what everyone is saying, drive/ride in both and I'm sure that will make the decision for me :). Thanks for the info for SJ, but I have soccer games tomorrow with my girls, opening day, you know how that goes...

Thanks Rickd. AAAHHH yes the Kirkham, just today at lunch, I went for a ride in one and it was AMAZING. It had a 511 ci all alum. KC motor. Man did that car run and the sound blew me away. I'm pretty sure the Kirkham is out for now, hopefully down the road :)

Craig,

That all sounds great. It took me about 6 months to digest the SPF price, but I decided it was worth it in the long run for me. If you find yourself in the Bay Area, drop me a line if you want to go for a ride or drive. I also assembled it myself at my shop, so I can answer any technical questions you may have.

Craig,

Just curious if you are also looking at pre-owned cars. There are SO many bargains out there right now, that you could end up saving big bucks and might even find a car that already has SB100. If you build a car (any make), you're going to take a haircut the day you take delivery...just like driving a new car off the lot.

snakebittexan 08-27-2009 01:32 PM

Craig,

It seems as if you've asked the $64,000 question. I was bit by the snake almost a year ago when my bride opened the door for "anything with four wheels" if I would sell my Harley. I looked, studied, read, discussed, rode with a local group, and searched some more until "the" car popped up totally unexpeditally and I immediatelly knew this was "my" car. My snake is a Rossa Red Backdraft with 17" knockoffs, a 351W and a 5-speed Tremac but more importantly is the incredable support Frank Dodd and the guys at Backdraft Racing in Florida have given me since I purchased the car. No matter which way you go you will need the support at some point and I can't say enough about the BDR guys.

My suggestion to you from someone who's only been part of this community for 60 days, is to follow the same path "Grasshopper," read, discuss, look, ride and look some more---you'll find "your" snake then you too will find yourself standing in the garage and just staring at it before you turn in dreaming of long empty stretches of back country roads.

Doug

I have looked at some used ones, but to be honest, I am very picky about my cars, the way they look with tires, paint, side pipes etc...If I'm going to spend 45-50K on a used car, I would rather spend another 10K to have it exactly the way I want it. I have change my views a little about Roush Motors as well. I have research used car prices and Roush does bring in a higher price with used cars. I'm not really looking at resale right now, we all know unless your driving a Kirkham or Shelby Cont., you will lose some money when you sell your car.

Richard,

I have for sure run the gauntlet of the different manufactures, from FFR to Kirkham. The more I research the more I learn and form my opinions, likes and dislikes. Everyone wants to get the most for their money, and wants to fell like they got the "DEAL" now is the time for deals. Right now I'm wide open and really not leaning one way or another. Your right, go look, talk, and look some more and you will find it, it may not be in the time frame you think it will be, that's how it usually works for me most of the time:).

When I was comparing these cars, it was a lot closer than 10k by the time you added all the options to the base BDR to equal what the standard SPF comes with.

Let me add that costs on these cars tend to "creep up on you." Regardless of what manufacturer or engine you choose, there will always be something more you can add on to it, or move up to the next step on it. You don't want to go broke, so my advice is to figure out what you feel comfortable paying (that means everything, even down to the trucking cost to get it sent to you) and then work backwards from that number to get as much as you can -- and don't leave anything out (cost wise). Once you've done that then you can begin to "pick and choose" what lesser cost options you might live with now, and upgrade later. Simple example: You might love the tripod bulbs, but you'll live with $10 bulbs for now and switching them out is nothing. Contrast that with the incremental cost of, say, a limited slip, and the PITA factor of putting it in later -- you might decide on that one that you're better off springing for it now.

Another hidden cost that I missed was sales tax on the engine, trans and car that NJ wanted when I went to register it. It turned out to be quite a large figure that hurt to explain to the wife

Those Swiss bank accounts aren't so secret anymore. The IRS has access now.
